The denial and cover-ups go deep because to admit being wrong is no different from church leaders admitting the church isn't actually led by actual Jesus.
I too would like to see more transparency in the church. I would think that leaders admitting when an error in judgement has been made would be healthy.
I do disagree with you, however, in making a direct connection between the fact that church leaders do not always exercise perfect judgement with whether or not the church is led by and instituted by God.
Those two things are not mutually inclusive. They may be exclusive of each other.
Joseph Smith said:
‘Some revelations are of God; and some revelations are of man: and some revelations are of the devil.’
I would hope that out of the three sources of revelation that the third is uncommon in regards to church leaders. My guess is that the second type of revelation, that of man, is fairly common. The first source, God, is a bit harder to come by.
And I think that holds true for
everyone.
Especially in a world so saturated with materiality and instant access to information. We tend to rely on both. To get revelation from God nowadays is a somewhat different matter than in days gone by, me thinks.
And again, I think that holds true for everyone in westernized societies where our material needs and easy access to ‘answers’ are so readily available.
