This forum is all too often focused on DCP’s negatives. Credit should be given when it’s due. One aspect of DCP I truly admire is that he takes on Mormon bigots who know nothing about Islam, and send him hate mail about it.

One unfortunate overlap between these Mormons and atheists is their misconception of Islam. Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens notably had extremely uncharitable views of the religion.

There are over a billion Muslims on earth, and I think DCP is absolutely right to defend them against the claim that all of them are violent just because they are known in the west only by the worst of their members.

I was one of the atheists who sided with Sam Harris and Hitchens when they dig piled on Islam after 9/11.

DCP’s writings actually changed my mind considerably on the issue, and I really do think he should get praise for standing up like he does. DCP doesn’t have to. He could easily ignore it, avoiding offending potential donors to Interpreter or even some LDS leaders.

I wish more famous atheists would take a position similar to Dan on Islam.
