RFM: Invasion of the Miracle Snatchers

This episode is an instant classic. RFM delivers highly distinctive original content yet again. Like David and Goliath, a long held story attributing some miraculous event to the prophet turns out to have “performed” by a no-name individual long lost to church history. Same thing happens, it turns out, with a so-called miracle perpetuated in the history of President Wilford Woodruff.

What was so refreshing about this podcast is that it was a SHORT (36 minutes) and made the points that needed to be made without dragging things out and running out the people's clock. It would be nice if RFM could include a label of some sort letting viewers know that it's a short presentation -- perhaps place a label with the number of minutes -- that way people who are pressed for time or unsure they want to make a commitment can be lured into pressing the button and listen to the whole thing without having to slice the podcast in order to listen to the rest later on.

I listened to the podcast twice because it was so good. It just goes to show that even a prophet's testimony is nothing more than a testimonkey!

Excellent episode, one which shows just how little we can trust the testimony of 19th century Mormon prophets, seers and revelators.

There are what attorneys and historians call eyewitness accounts. And they're credible. The fact that you hate history and accept only evidence provided by sciences such as herpetology and astrophysics is merely a weird quirk of yours. It says nothing about the evidence.

You're far too ignorant on the subject to have a meaningful opinion regarding it.

And it rips DCP’s most prized apologetic argument, that we should trust their testimony, to shreds.

DCP puts too much weight on witness testimony and refuses to acknowledge this. Someone coming into my office saying that they were hit by a speeding driver is a common claim warranting further investigation and depending on the vehicle damage, and injuries, I will be interested in the case. But, if that person claims the speeding driver was Big Foot, I will ask who his drug dealer is, or if he is putting me on, not believing that part of the claim. I'll still look at the property damage and personal injury damage and may even take the case so long as I don't have to put the crazy on the stand.

In this scenario, DCP's witnesses are either are claiming Big Foot drove the car or are putting the world on. Either way, no Nephites, means no validity to the witness' claims.

Further, Joseph Smith never let anyone else see his phony plates, the Lucy Harris incident should cause one to disbelieve Joseph Smith's claims, the D&C is obviously made up, the Book of Abraham ......

While poking around in a volume on my dusty bookshelves, I located a citation to another account of the incident. It's contained in a letter from Wilford Woodruff dated 15 February 1849. It would seem that Woodruff's mythologizing began fairly early.

Smith didn't translate anything and contrived everything, the entire religion is made up and a fraud. Oh, he was a 'prophet' alright... for profit, just like today's LDS 'church'.
