It appears the Church has now officially lost the battle with the hearts and minds of its members on this issue.
As the Senate considers legislation to protect same-sex marriage, a new poll shows nearly three-fourths of Utahns support legal same-sex marriage.
The new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics survey found 72% of residents agree that marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages. The poll shows 23% disagree, while 5% don’t know.
“For a state that less than 20 years ago passed laws and a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage, there has been a seismic shift in opinion,” said Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah.
When same-sex marriage became recognized in Utah in 2014 — a year ahead of the Supreme Court decision — it had support from less than half of Utahns. A January 2014 Deseret News/KSL poll amid the legal battle and contentious public debate over the issue found a majority of Utahns (57%) opposed same-sex marriage.

In the brief period of the past ten years, this country and most of the free world have been converted into a space-age Sodom and Gomorrah, aided by some publishers, movie producers, and even some so-called educators. Moral principles have been eclipsed by the blind, ungodly pursuit of pleasure—pleasure at any price.
This evil is influencing the rapid deterioration of our sacred, moral principles that seems to be sweeping the land. Some neighborhood movie houses now show films that neither parents nor society would have tolerated a few years ago. Hard-core pornography is now available at candy stores and supermarkets at popular prices.
We are told that some of the “very elect” will be enticed and deceived. Couldn’t this “very elect” include your sons and daughters, even though through baptism they have already accepted Christ as their Savior? Wouldn’t the evil one concentrate on them if he found a weakness or an opportunity?
A college student hoping to repent of some serious mistakes and straighten out his life told me only a few days ago of an influence which, for a time, controlled his life. His desire to have some expert ski equipment encouraged him to accept a job on Sundays and evenings. This prevented him from attending priesthood and other Sunday meetings. Now he was too tired to attend early morning seminary. With his new, fancy ski equipment, he made the high school team and made some new friends. To be “with it,” he started to smoke and soon moved to marijuana and from marijuana to LSD. His father and mother now appeared old-fashioned to him. He moved from his parents’ home to live with his newfound friends in an old house. The house had extra rooms, so they invited a young lady—also on drugs—to move in. His father tried to visit him, to communicate through letters. But this young man now felt completely disenchanted with church and home. After these tragic mistakes, he finally came to his senses and moved home with his parents. He told me, “The devil seemed to be in charge of my life.”

Overwhelmingly so.
A majority of Utahn who identified as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the survey favor legal same-sex marriage.
The poll found 58% of those who consider themselves “very active” in the church agree that marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized by the law as valid, with same rights as traditional marriages. The number rose to 76% among “somewhat” and “not active” Latter-day Saints.

Younger people in the Utah survey showed greater support — 89% among 18- to 24-year-olds.
I guess these are the age group of people Holland recently accused of lacking integrity if they go inactive.

Although the Supreme Court ruled that states must recognize same-sex marriages, 29 states — including Utah — have what Kitchen called “trigger bans” in place which would go into effect if the current court overturns the landmark 2015 decision.

What 2015 decision?

My God, Holland better work on those 23% to pull out their muskets on their ward families. If you don't love Jesus more than your moms or sons, you simply aren't worthy.

That religious ideation is why people of good conscience are leaving the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The disconnect between the love of Jesus and the hatred of the Brethren is too much to reconcile.

Beautifully said, Moksha. (Well, it would be beautiful if not for the fact that the truth it tells is so damned dark and frustrating.)

I don't know...Jesus impressed upon them to hate everyone who wasn't him--hate your mom, and dad, and son, and daughter and love him the most was his great plea, I thought. When the brethren teach to hate others for Jesus' sake, they are doing what he tells them.
One thing seems certain though, when people of religion rebel against Jesus' teachings, and they wish to remain religious, they do so and pretend their religion is really only about love. They make it something that they want rather than what they are told. Mormons and Calvinists can do that easy enough. When they ignore Jesus' bad teachings and embrace his good they are simply denying their god and religion for common sense.

True. People tend to build the best versions of their religions from the construction materials available. What they create may be beautiful because they've left the less attractive materials strewn about the ground. But whether good, bad, beautiful, ugly, or a combination of all, common sense usually has nothing to do with finished product.
