There are about eight states that prohibit atheists from serving in public office, the US Constitution prohibition against religious tests for public office be damned.

Can they be removed for becoming atheist while in office?

The laws haven't been challenged yet in the courts. Probably not, but the way the Republicans stacked during the last administration....

It's not unusual for states to have unconstitutional laws on their books. When a law is held unconstitutional, the state will in many cases stop enforcing the law, but the legislature won't take the step of repealing it. A good example is the pre-Roe abortion laws that stayed on the books even though they were unconstitutional under Roe. Are these newly passed laws? Has any state tried to enforce them?

There is the potential for many strange decisions coming from the Trump court.
