Reddit Responds To DCP

Thanks to DCP's ridiculous comments on the Newsweek article, exmormon reddit has devoted an entire thread to Tapir Dan. Here are just a few of the interesting comments:

I had to home teach that dude when I was in young men's program--it may have been my first assignment with my dad. Everyone in the ward was so enamored with him and how smart he was and he was certainly enamored with himself. I always felt ridiculous trying to share a lesson with him--he'd politely listen then fix everything I said wrong. Ugh.

Fun fact my MIL knows Danny-boy personally (FIL passed but he and Dan had mutual friends in real high places) and when I was "questioning" she offered to have Dan come over and "talk to me". Politely declined, of course

God, he’s such a clown. Conversely, he’s the best thing to happen to ex-Mormonism over the last thirty years - he’s hastening the work like no one else.

Let's give credit where credit is due. Dan Peterson, Kwaku, Hugh Nibley, Hannah Stoddard, the fine folks at FAIRMormon...keep up the good work

Isn't Tapir Dan the one who likes to pretend he's Indiana Mormon Jones by putting the name of whatever exotic location he's writing from in the byline on his blog? He should have written that on his comment here.

It's literally in lesson manuals and conference talks from apostles for well over 100 years and yet that asshat wants to outright lie (and make no mistake, he knows it's a lie) that it was never taught by the church.

I thought Kwaku was the new Daniel C Peterson. Why is Daniel C Peterson still around?

He came out of retirement to fill in while Kwaku is involuntarily institutionalized in a mental hospital.

Guessing from memory here, but I think Danny Boy is performing a “No True Scotsman” logical fallacy.

How can you be nearly headless?
Is there any logical fallacy that Dan has not used?

I always chuckle when I see Dan’s tapir in their subreddit banner.

He's a dinosaur. The younger generations don't subscribe to his brand of attack Mormonism and that's a good thing.

Since when did he ever say anything so silly as "it was never taught in the church"?. Someone is so eager to condemn they appear to be in a rush to misunderstand.

Dan lies all the time. Here’s one from 2005:
Daniel Peterson: "If you're suggesting that the Church maintains some sort of intelligence-gathering operation (of the kind that the poor folks at the “Recovery” board like to imagine is spying upon them), then the answer, so far as I can determine (and that's fairly far), is No."
http://mormoncurtain.infymus.com/topic_ ... erson.html
It’s even more ironic as in 2012 DCP mistakenly doxxed Chico Blanco from exMo reddit’s real name. Thinking it was the “malevolent stalker.”
And he has doxxed (most likely incorrectly again) someone else just tonight.
I’m sure if I had the time I could find him lying in the same way about racism in the church.

Speaking of Peterson’s attempts at doxxing, a couple years ago he got some “intel” from Smoky (that’s right the one who was here for a while promoting holocaust denial, naziism, etc.) about who I was. This was around the time I was posting about his plagiarism, so he was pretty angry at me.
His information was wrong of course, but still, he took some delight in posting on his Patheos blog the professor’s name, her dept and her university. Eventually, he acknowledged his error, but the damage was done. I have felt bad about that for a while, because I have no doubt the person got some very bizarre and inappropriate emails after that.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so harmful. Nothing will happen to me if DCP discovers who I am, since I am completely divorced from my former Mormon life. But I know DCP is hoping he can cause familial grief in as many ex-Mormon lives as possible. And a lot of anonymous posters here would be incredibly damaged by DCP doxxing them.

Funny this should come up. As I recall, DCP was bishop of a singles ward. I would imagine that, for the most part, he was a good and conscientious bishop, though perhaps a somewhat condescending and judgmental one. The thing that sticks out to me—and grosses me out, to be honest—is that he said he once asked one of his parishioners if they knew what “coitus interruptus” was. The history of Mopologetics is filled with many grotesque moments, I guess.

To give you some idea of how completely dismissively he viewed his parishioners who left the faith:
DCP wrote:The majority of people who go inactive, in my experience, don’t leave the Church over historical or theological issues at all. They do so because they would rather golf or stay in bed on Sunday, or drink, or do drugs, or sleep with their girlfriends, or whatever.
The vast majority of people, Mormon and non-Mormon, simply don’t live their lives worrying about historical issues or engaging in intellectual debates.
Perhaps I actually have a bit of an advantage because I grew up in a nuclear and extended family with very few intellectual pretensions or academic achievements, and because I worked construction through grad school. I have no illusions that everybody is an intellectual or is motivated by intellectual issues. Half of my relatives are non-Mormons, but virtually all of the rest of them are, at the very most, marginal members. In fact, the majority are completely inactive.
None of my relatives, so far as I’m aware, have left the Church over any crisis of faith. They’re gone because they don’t live, and don’t care to live, a Mormon lifestyle. In fact, I’m inclined to think that part of the problem is that they (and many others like them) were mediocre-to-bad students who hated school and got out of it as soon as they possibly could, and that the Church, with its three-hour block of (essentially) lectures and its seminaries and institutes and its other meetings and its difficult-to-read scriptures (which should be studied every day), is, in many ways, uncomfortably (for them) like a program of perpetual adult education. I like them all, but they’re not exactly wrestling with the problem of divine foreknowledge, or agonizing over whether Spalding’s wordprint shows up in 3 Nephi, or struggling to come to grips with how to meet the challenge of the Neo-Darwinian synthesis.
When I was a bishop of a UVU-related singles ward, I ran into only one person who had rejected the Church because of theological disagreements. The OVERWHELMING majority of the inactives with whom I came in contact have gone missing for much earthier reasons.
I suspect that many who have left the Church over historical or doctrinal concerns have re-created those others who have dropped out of participation in their image. If they do, though, they’re mistaken.
Do people leave the Church because of purely intellectual, historical, and/or spiritual concerns? Yes. I have never denied this, but have actually said it on numerous occasions (including this podcast), But I think they’re in a distinct minority.

Nobody who left the religion on his watch (or in his family) did so for any reasons other than sex, drugs, and alcohol.

Dan sounds like he was a grotesque and creepy bishop. I'm glad I wasn't a student in his ward.
I can imagine this exchange:
Bishop DCP: Brother Chung, please come to my office for a minute. I want to talk to you about coitus interruptus.
