I had several requests to respond to this BYU Speech given just this last week by Kevin S. Hamilton of the Quorum of the 70 on Why the need for a church, so here is part 1.

Do Mormons believe the Catholic Church was for any period of time, even a couple of years, the true church on the earth?

They must, right? That’s part of the apostasy narrative. To be charitable to his talk, isn’t that what he’s talking about when he says Jesus set up a church?

If so, what date do they claim the Catholic church lost its authority?
