The Two Cumorah Solution

The Two Cumorah Solution

This is some information I discovered on line, mostly during the Pandemic while working from home. (bored 😓)

Louis Edward Hills, at the time a member of The First Quorum of the Seventy of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, headquartered in Independence, MO, wrote three books limiting the Geography of The Book of Mormon to Central America.
(Hills did not call it ā€œMesoamerica.ā€)

HathiTrust, a repository of books in the Public Domain, has linked to the three books from GoogleBooks. Google scanned them from separate libraries, not necessarily in this order:

* The Library of Congress
* Princeton
* University of Wisconsin-Madison

I created tinyurls to each scanned book. Each book contains the ā€œMesoamericaā€ map, some have called ā€œMormon’s Mapā€ and/or the ā€œSorenson Model.ā€

The third scanned book with a 1924 publication date, is missing the map. But I own two physical copies of the 1924 book, a First and Second Edition, which I purchased off of Amazon in 2021. The First Edition that I own has the fold-out map. The second edition has a forward by his daughter Louisa Hills, published after her Father’s death in 1925, but contains the same 1924 publication date.

Her second marriage was performed by her Father in her Father’s home, at 201 S. Willis Avenue, Independence, Missouri. That is the address where M2C was created on April 1917.

Look up the address on a search engine to see the modest house still standing. I gleaned that information from RLDS documents, which I’m currently keeping to myself.

This is the listing on Amazon for one of the 1924 books I purchased on July 27, 2021:

https://www.amazon.com/New-Light-Americ ... 160&sr=8-2

HathiTrust:

https://tinyurl.com/LEHills1918book
https://tinyurl.com/LEHills1918map

**

https://tinyurl.com/LEHills1919book
https://tinyurl.com/Hills1919Map

https://tinyurl.com/LEHills1924book

The 1918 & 1919 books, Hills compared The Book of Mormon to the Maya Civilization. The 1924 book is actually a series of lectures by L.E. Hills compiled into a book.

On page 139 is the Two Cumorah idea:

https://tinyurl.com/LEHills1924bookM2C

On page 130, Hills references a March 25, 1911 article by H.A. Stebbins, an older member of the RLDS Church, born Jan 1844, who came up with the Two Cumorah idea, due to the RLDS Church’s ā€œCommittee on American Archaeologyā€ using a hemispheric map. That’s a typo or printer’s error. The actual date is March 11, 1911.

Hills is quoting Stebbins as an appeal to authority, to incorporate his Two Cumorah theory and the geography of The Book of Mormkn, into a limited area in Central America, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Go to page 245 of this .pdf and read the March 15, 1911 article by Stebbins. If you are familiar with the arguments of F.A.R.M.S., you will see the originals here, such as the idea that the New York Cumorah was merely called Cumorah, due to tradition, but that the actual Hill Cumorah is still undiscovered somewhere in Mexico.

The Two Cumorahs idea, was due to a false Hemispheric model. Zarahemla/Land of Nephi in South America was too far from Cumorah in New York.

(This is a large .pdf that will load better on a desktop or tablet, vs a phone, due to possible memory constraints.)

There are currently two organizations in Missouri who promote L.E. Hills ideas:

The Hill Cumorah Expedition Team:

https://hillcumorahexpeditionteam.com or http://hceti.org/ …and… https://www.bomf.org/

Two organizations in Utah promote L.E. Hills’s ideas:

BookofMormonCentral

https://bookofmormoncentral.org/

Interpreter Foundation

https://interpreterfoundation.org/

FAIRLDS - based in Florida(?)

https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/

The books are also found here:

https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org ... s?lang=eng

The book called the ā€œStick of Josephā€ is an annotated RLDS version of The Book of Mormon with Maya-themed images, annotated by L.E. Hills himself.

ENJOY!

The first two link link to the same site, from what I see on my end. I’m getting a bunch of 404 errors. I’m on an ipad, so I don’t know if it’s a me thing or a them thing.

The third link, well, I don’t get it. Is there Cumorah stuff I’m missing? It’s loading weird for me, so again I’m not sure if it’s my device or their site. I can’t make sense of it.

Hi,

I’m also on an iPad. I created the post with an iPad. I’m not sure why you may be getting 404 errors. The Hill Cumorah Expedition Team uses two separate URLs to the same site; I assume one is for an abbreviation. They are also on Facebook.

BOMF.org or The Book of Mormon Foundation site, is a site that doesn’t actually fit well in an ipad or phone browser. This link mentions their history: https://www.bomf.org/bmf-history.html

Publications: https://www.bomf.org/publications.html

The late Shirley Heater mentioned, was a volunteer contributor at Kirk Magleby’s BMAF.org in Utah County, which is now Book of Mormon Central.

http://www.bmaf.org/bio/shirley_heater

(I’m in Arizona..I never met anyone involved. I’ve just seen this online contention between Mesos & Heartlanders)

Another publication:

One can see 2012 articles criticizing the Heartland model.

There's a slight difference in the appearance of the home pages of the first two. The abbreviated URL simply puts the longer URL in a frame.

I'm on a Windows 10 PC, and I get 404s for all of the links at the top of the home page.

This is the address of Louis Edward Hills:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/201- ... 7266_zpid/

https://www.trulia.com/p/mo/independenc ... 1011416356

His house is still standing, erected in the mid-1870s.

201 S. Willis Ave., Independence, MO.

Google Earth Link:

https://earth.app.goo.gl/?apn=com.googl ... yKixhXAKAI

You can see how close he lived to the New Jerusalem Temple lot. He held many of his ā€œM2Cā€ lectures at the Stone Church at the north side of the Temple lot.

He died in June 1925 from being struck by an automobile while walking near his home. His obituary states the car slid on the wet pavement, before it hit him. He died some 3-5 days later, due to the accident.

I apologize. I was merely copying and pasting from the Safari browser, on an iPad, into this site. Thank you for that information.
