A few years ago I had the opportunity to talk to a RLDS apostle. He and I were setting up tables for dinner at a Sunstone conference.
I asked him about the then-current view of the RLDS on the Temple Lot Case, in which polygamy was a major source of discussion, with the Reorganized church arguing that Joseph was not a polygamist.
He replied: "We were wrong - plain and simple."

The notion that the Teraphim were instruments of divination comes directly from the Clarke Commentary, if memory serves.

They appear as “oracle idols” in chapters 17 and 18 of Judges. So, there is a Biblical precedent for the association, although the practice is condemned in other places in the Bible.

Perhaps Smith's biggest blunder as a highly iniquitous individual is linking polygamy to a God-given command when it is arguably the last thing a caring, sensitive God who loves his daughters would 'command' any man to require of any woman. But Smith wasn't a man, he was scum, a charismatic, masterful scam artist and con-man, serial adulterer and charlatan of the highest order with delusions of grandeur!
