Nemo co-opts LDS Inc's logic to declare his tithing

I think it's pretty genius. "I declared $0 in tithing. It's not accurate, it's simply meant to communicate that I don't feel obligated to pay tithing."
In 2007, for example, Ensign Peak recorded $1 million for its total assets and in later years wrote “over” $1 million. The real 2007 number, the article stated, was about $38 billion.
“It wasn’t an accurate answer. It wasn’t meant to be an accurate answer,” L. Todd Budge, second counselor in the three-member Presiding Bishopric and former banking and private-equity executive, told the paper. “It was simply meant to communicate that we do not feel that we’re obligated to fill in that box.”
It warms my heart that Nemo is doing such great and valuable work as an active critical Mormon in the UK. More Mormons need to stay within the church and force change on the inside.

That excuse kills me every time I read it. There are several appropriate ways to communicate “I don’t think I should have to answer that question. Exactly none of them involve answering the question in a deceptive manner.

Three cheers for Nemo. His actions in the UK are heroic. It takes a lot of guts to stand up and speak your truth in a religious tradition where truth is frequently absent. I really admire Nemo, plus he is Consiglieri smart.

It highlights how arbitrary the ecclesiastical excommunication rules are in the US versus the rest of the world. Bishop roulette. Dehlin gets excommunicated for having doubts about the church. Meanwhile Nemo and Tom Phillips are actively working against the status quo with no threat of any discipline.
The church is arbitrary when it comes to things they don’t care much about, like members’ eternal salvation. It’s only finances where everything has to be completely uniform and the rules absolute. There’s no bishop roulette when it comes to sending tithing to salt lake.

As a young man I had a boyfriend during the PoX. Not a husband mind you but a boyfriend in another city.
Rules be damned. If they really wanna excommunicate ya they’ll find a way.
