I always loved to read history. My grades were not that good in math and English, but history was always an A or an A plus. Maybe that's why I never really considered the Book of Mormon as a history book. Just seeing New Testament passages in it demonstrated plagiarism so it wasn't history. Now since I like U.S. history, especially colonial history, when I started as a young twenty year old looking at the Bible I was wondering who wrote it. Learning about the four authors in Genesis was very interesting. Learning that when the Jews were in Babylon, Jeremiah became a redactor and it all pretty much made sense. When I see late Isaiah in the Book of Mormon I say to myself that it was most likely written after Lehi went to the promise land.

But I will say this: if one reads Isaiah you come up to chapter 39 and then it sort of stops. The next chapter is written by someone with a complete different personality. Sometimes I ask my self if Isaiah took a break, went through an existential crisis, wondered around with no clothes on to see what it was like to be poor and then started writing. So I look at the verses post chapter 39 and ask my self what is the truth. Was a traumatized Isaiah writing post chapter 39. But then Isaiah 45 talks about Cyrus and I'm back to square one.

Loving history, the general view of scholars is that chapter 40 is written by different person living later during the captivity in Babylon. It is standard to look at first Isaiah second Isaiah, starting here and and a third subsequent writer.
