Documumentary on Conversion therapy at BYU makes a liar out of Oaks

Post by Dr. Sunstoned »

Fox 13 news is reporting that students at Salt Lake Community College are premiering a documentary about the impact of conversion therapy that happened at Brigham Young University in the late 1970s.

Here is a selected quote that is more evidence that is at odds with Dallin Oaks claim that while he was the president of BYU from 1971 through 1980, no such therapy was happening on the campus.
Specifically electroshock therapy that students did volunteer to be a part of, that had a very negative, traumatic effect on them and how it has shaped the rest of their lives afterwards," Leonard explained.

I doubt that. The church will just punt it to the Mopologists, just like it always does.

Daniel Peterson knows many of the brethren personally and knows they would never lie because they are such upstanding men of great integrity and character.

And I trust his spiritual twin, Dallin.

Why did Oaks deny this? I mean, if it was true, and it was, that conversion therapy happened on his watch, he ought to just acknowledge it and come up with some other way of minimizing the damage (“We had no idea it was so harmful,” etc.). It’s like the Watson letter nonsense. Making stupid crap up and then being caught. Very regrettable. I am not a huge fan of Oaks. In fact, I really don’t like him. He is the most aggressively anti-gay apostle, and so I have a difficult time mustering any sympathy for him, but talk about unforced errors and dumb-effery!
