Trump and Joseph Smith as King

Post by hauslern »

We have a crucial decision coming if the US President can be held liable. Some say if approved makes him a King:

Was Smith crowned as king?

Crowned? Not so much. More like he was nominated and voted on. Here are the minutes from the Council of the Fifty meeting where he was voted in as King.
Er Erastus Snow arose to repeat the expression of Er [George J.] Adams the other evening for he feels this to be the happiest moment he ever enjoyed. He feels as though his soul expanded every time we meet. We have never realized the strength and power of the simple expressions in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants—“Be patient for I am laying the foundation of a great work”. It may yet be said that we are still laying the foundation of a great work, and I am happy that I have the privilege of associating with our beloved prophet and the members of this council, and prays that I may live as long as Moses” He said he never rejoiced as much as he did to day when Prest. Joseph was making his remarks. He concluded by offering a motion that this honorable assembly receive from this time henceforth and forever, Joseph Smith, as our Prophet, Priest & King, and uphold him in that capacity in which God has anointed him.257
The motion was seconded and accepted unanimously

Makes me wonder whether Trump demanded to be appointed Emperor of the Earth and his disloyal White House staff talked him out of it.

Were there any jewelers in Nauvoo who could fashion a crown?

What did some say prior to Joseph Smith's birth?

"That magistrate is to be elected for FOUR years; and is to be re-eligible as often as the people of the United States shall think him worthy of their confidence. In these circumstances there is a total dissimilitude between HIM and a king of Great Britain, who is an HEREDITARY monarch, possessing the crown as a patrimony descendible to his heirs forever; but there is a close analogy between HIM and a governor of New York, who is elected for THREE years, and is re-eligible without limitation or intermission. If we consider how much less time would be requisite for establishing a dangerous influence in a single State, than for establishing a like influence throughout the United States, we must conclude that a duration of FOUR years for the Chief Magistrate of the Union is a degree of permanency far less to be dreaded in that office, than a duration of THREE years for a corresponding office in a single State."

"The President of the United States would be liable to be impeached, tried, and, upon conviction of treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanors, removed from office; and would afterwards be liable to prosecution and punishment in the ordinary course of law. The person of the king of Great Britain is sacred and inviolable; there is no constitutional tribunal to which he is amenable; no punishment to which he can be subjected without involving the crisis of a national revolution. In this delicate and important circumstance of personal responsibility, the President of Confederated America would stand upon no better ground than a governor of New York, and upon worse ground than the governors of Maryland and Delaware."

Could Joseph Smith Jr. receive any punishment in or by his community?

You make an indirect observation as to the motivations that some Mormons supported Smith and their progeny support Trump. They’re Kingsmen, and not in the cool way. It boils down to Divine Authority, dynasties, dynastic relationships, and the inviolate word of God as expressed through His representatives on Earth.

Sure they pay lip service to a Republic, but there’s a strong streak of godly authoritarianism that runs through their democratic fervor.

Hugh Nibley claimed he bumped into Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Gertrude Stein, and the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanoff. Dishonesty is baked into Mormonism.

The pastor and the prophet:

The airwaves have exploded on the internet with a pastor willing to attack the crass commercialism of Trump pushing his Bible with political literature inserted. He needs money, he claims it is his favorite book which he has many. Interview he was asked which was his favourite verse to which he gave an answer "its too personal"

If Trump loses in November to Biden, perhaps Trump can pivot and turn the MAGA movement into a new American religion.

It is already ecumenical with Evangelicals and Mormon Saints. For Evangelicals, he is the Messiah and for Mormons, he is the one mighty and strong.

If Trump does win it can become the state religion and I would expect Congressional Republicans to issue resolutions to that effect.
