Thomas Jefferson Reconsidering the Jefferson–Hemings Relationship: Nationalist Historiography without Nationalist Heroes, Racial
Sexuality without Racial Significance.

Jefferson did not respond to Callenders accusation that Sally Hemings children look like Jefferson.
Joseph Ellis long time critic of those who allege the relationship now accepts it took place.

Joseph Smith's denials
MARRIAGE. v. 4 "Inasmuch as this church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy; we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband, except in the case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again." 1835 Doctrine and Covenants, C1, p. 251 (1835).

"...What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one." (Joseph Smith - who at the time had secretly taken at least 25 plural wives)
Joseph Smith refers people to extract from Doctrine and Covenants on Marriage which disavows polygamy, stating that this is "the only rule allowed by the church." Times and Seasons, vol. 3, p. 909 (1842). See bottom half of left-hand column.

Joseph Smith repeats again statement from Doctrine and Covenants on Marriage to deny all allegations of polygamy being practice. Times and Seasons, vol. 3, p. 939 (1842).

" She is generally considered the first plural wife of Joseph Smith. Although undocumented, the marriage of Fanny and Joseph most likely took place in Kirtland, Ohio sometime in 1833. She would have been sixteen years old. At the time, Fanny was living in the Smith home, perhaps helping Emma with house work and the children. "

Donald Trump
" Former President Donald Trump denied having an affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels and attacked her appearance in a lengthy statement issued through his campaign, hours after reports emerged that he is likely to be criminally charged in connection to a hush money payment made to her during his 2016 presidential campaign."

Louise Midgley has long attacked Fawn Brodie's book on Jefferson. Try to discredit both her writing on Joseph Smith and Thomas Jefferson.

That can’t be the real Joseph Smith. The lovely young hunky looking boy from Witnesses? That Joseph would never do anything wrong!

hauslern, I may be feeling tired today but your link article about historical treatment of Jefferson was too crabbed for me to wish to dig through. Was there something of interest buried behind those thickets of unpleasant sentences?

I found a more straightforward set of observations:

https://clarknow.clarku.edu/2018/12/12/ ... -audience/

I am still not sure what you are taking aim at. Men with power can sexually manipulate. I am unsure which repulses me more, Kennedy diddling away with the women while he sank our military further into Vietnam, or Clinton disrespecting his wife and as a result decreasing the country's respect for her. Hillary deserved more respect.

Real people are a mixed bag. I do not think anybody does being president without flaws.

Romney forgets about his religion's founder when he married 30+ women just to not have sex with them.

Some critics attack the testimony of Madison Hemings that his mother was Jefferson's concubine. I like Annette Gordon Reeds response "“The notion of who gets to pronounce a historical truth is very, very contested territory,” she said. “The heresy was believing black people.”

Midgley knowing Fawn Brodie was right about Jefferson meant she was right about Smith, but Richard Bushman already admitted that Brodie was correct. Midgley was a sourgrapes kind of guy.

by the way, Sally Hemmings was nearly 15 when they started their sealing practice...

Do LDS consider any woman that Joseph Smith copulated with to have been, definitionally, a "wife" of Joseph Smith?
