40% Of LDS Missionaries Are Leaving The Church Within 6 Months?

"We have it on very good authority that the church is now telling people in secret private meetings that 40% of Mormon missionaries who are returning from their missions as of late are leaving the Mormon church within six months." (John Dehlin)

If true, this is terrible news for the Church. If 40% of missionaries are leaving the Church, then it seems the mission is actively deconverting more people than if they had just stayed home. So, going on a mission now puts one at risk of leaving the Church much more than someone who doesn't go on a mission?

So strange. I would love to learn more about this.

It would be interesting, but it sounds so gossipy to me.... I can understand if 40% of young people choose not to go at all, but that high after going? Of course, 6 months can be an eternity when you are so blithering horny you are going blitzoid, to be sure...... perhaps if they changed the church's policy and told the youth, "Once you get home from your mission, then you are free to engage in all your sexual fantasies and go to town enjoying yourself for a few years until you find the right one."

To me, that's good news. I speculate that the reason is because young people nowadays have more self-respect than to just take being used and abused, like so many of us assumed was just the natural order of things.

Actually, if one missionary converts two people during their mission in the two years they are out, and then they leave when they go home, they will have covered their loss and increased the numbers. So even if they are leaving, the numbers are still going up.

Last time I was at church, about a year ago, a kid had come home from his mission and he was giving a talk and it was very obvious that he was traumatised. He kept talking about how he is struggling even after returning home.

I had a niece who went to Brazil and within 6 months was giving blowies (as told to me by my wife, who claims she doesn’t enjoy gossip) and doing drugs. This girl came from a staunchly Mormon upbringing right in the heart of the Morridor.

The content on the Internet is the reason, obviously. Like Shades said, kids these days aren’t too keen being lied to and treated like cattle.

I too think it sounds gossipy. Plus, as always with the LDS church, there's absolutely no way to easily verify or contradict this.

But, I don't think the kids are leaving because of sex. Gen Z is famously less sexually active than previous generations. Whether this is because they are jerking it to easily accessible porn or because of less sexual activity in general is kind of hard to determine. I'm sure some leave for sex, but if sex was the big reason to leave, Gen X would have been leaving in far greater numbers, which they didn't.

Doubt it's sex related because it would have been happening since the beginning.

Within six months of returning from Brazil, or within six months of arriving in Brazil?
