I watched it. The most amazing moment was R. Biblioteca's reaction when they announced their decision (to deny). Her jaw dropped farther than anyone's I have ever seen, and she was speechless for several seconds. That was worth the whole episode.

Note that the council says they would love to have a Mormon temple, as long as it fits the zoning requirements.
But this will still be portrayed by the usual suspects as a modern Holocaust against the LDS religion.

Watched the whole thing. The members did nothing but bear testimony and reiterate rehearsed lines that Church lawyers coached them to say. And speaking of lawyers, the Church had a half dozen on the front row, sitting there like vultures. The one who spoke was a total jackass and derided the Mayor and the City Council. Lots of threats. It was a PR disaster for the Church.

The Church's threat to bankrupt Fairview with lawsuits has the making of a major story. A Goliath with hundreds of billions of dollars versus a David trying to preserve the established nature of a residential area.
This is a chance for the Church to show it can bully towns and cities across the US with the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000.
Win the battle and lose the war.

They likely will just submit new plans for a downsized temple to be built. It depends on the area they want to build it. If it's in Utah or Idaho where the planning commission is likely LDS then they can build a 150 to 200 foot steeple but if the commission is not LDS and they are not in an LDS area then they will need to redesign it and submit new plans. The commission denying it was very gracious allowing for a smaller design to be submitted.

I don't understand why it is such an imposition to ask the LDS Church to build temples that match the aesthetic of the communities in which they will stand.

Wow. "LDS representatives" exhibiting "extreme arrogance." You'd think just for PR purposes they would handle stuff like this better, but clearly they are used to being bullies and getting their way.Everybody Wang Chung wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 11:08 pmIf you've ever wondered why Mormons are so disliked, listen to this part:

That was one of the most enjoyable damn videos I've ever seen on YouTube. Thanks to the Mormon Discussion gang for covering it.
I am very proud of the Fairview zoning commission in the face of MormBullies Inc.
I will be happy to donate to their defense fund, should they establish one.
