Kish,

Say what you will about JD....his videos on truth claims, with folks like Sandra, Ritner, Bushman, Palmer, Quinn, Metcalf and DV....etc will be priceless to future historians, they will age with time. He knows that and slows everything down for "history," he gets that and that is his genius. Your critiquing him in the negative, comes off weak. You haven't earned the right yet. It is like a new hire criticizing his boss.

I tried to listen to your podcast today while driving, to many "I" s......I don't care about you (from a podcast point of view, I care about you as a person)....I care about the subject. I kept fast forwarding trying to get to it and really never found it.

My two cents.
Thanks, Markk! People have different views on the insertion of the self. Some like it, others don’t. I had a very specific criticism of something John does that impacts a limited range of viewers. I think it is fair to point that out. I have been an observer and interlocutor in this community for decades, so I feel OK about saying something. It is not as though I went out guns blazing to trash MoSto.

It's okay to say something, LoL that's what we do here. I am just giving you my opinion as you asked. And again, LoL I am a professional podcast listener in my daily commute. But perception is everything when starting out. When RFM first started it was like who is this guy, he looks like a poor man Bob Hope and laughs like Phyllis Diller on meth, what does he know about Mormonism? That certainly changed, he is a master communicator and does his home work and I learn so much from his efforts.

I commend you for having the nads to put yourself out there, but again the perception was, "who is this guy criticizing the Rush Limbo of Mormon podcasts, as a rookie podcaster."

Part of the problem may be personal, in that visually you are nothing like your avatar, Lol, that was certainly a let down. I am a huge fan of westerns and I would have expected you as Marston in Quigley Down Under...."Bourbon with Kish" ....not a person snuggling up with a coffee cup.

It's funny about perceptions, and how an Avatar can paint a word picture of a person in our minds. But people get very rich creating brands by perception, both good and bad.

I’m definitely thankful for your observations. I don’t really disagree. I am just trying to carve out my own space and not duplicate what MoSto, Mormonism Live, and BYP do already. I had the thought that it would be interesting to critique something from the perspective of a fan of a show instead of playing into the usual pro-/anti- fights.

I have been a fan of Mormon Stories from the beginning. In this episode, I share something of my history with John Dehlin and Mormon Stories. Then, I critique something he did recently that I think is an unfortunate tendency on Mormon Stories. It is a great show but not a perfect one by any means.
For those of us without 40 minutes to watch the video, will you please tell us what he did recently that is an unfortunate tendency on Mormon Stories?
The idea I got was perhaps he interjected a personal negative opinion of patriarchal blessings. I could be way off on that, and don’t have a link to a specific episode where this may have taken place.
"Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy” Jude 1:24
“the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 ESV

The rest of us can be one of Nibley's footnotes or even a comma.

I always thought the PoGP was the most interesting part.

It was in the series on Matthew Harris’s book Second Class Saints. John had some Black ex- or non-believing LDS people on to talk about the Harris book. It was an excellent episode. Lots of interesting information and insights. Yes, JD said that patriarchal blessings are made-up BS. I thought that would be pretty off-putting to believing LDS folk.

It should be off putting because they are made up. Harris's book sealed the deal for me on that issue. It is more than patently obvious it is faked. There is no revelation in them. Being told by a doctor you have pulmonary lung disease and are going to die in a year is off putting, but it is vastly superior to saying yes you have at least 25 more years and your energy levels are going to give you joy for hiking, running marathons, climbing the Matterhorn, and sailboating...... sometimes the truth is off putting.
