Fact Check: My believing wife just told me that in his closing remarks at conference, Nelson is now claiming that when he and Wendy were in Africa and had their robbery attempt at a mission home, that a gun was held to his head. His assailants pulled the trigger and the gun misfired. I don’t remember the original story supporting this new claim of a misfire. Knowing Nelson has had a history of cough cough exaggerating faith promoting claims, I’m calling BS. What did the original story claim?

The highlight for me was the loss of the Mission President’s Rolex watch. Who in their right mind parades around Mozambique wearing a Rolex watch pretending to be a humble man of God on a Mission?

I would also note that Wendy and Russell Nelson got to great lengths to make everything all about them. Once again proving that eye witness testimony is notoriously unreliable. I wonder if the Mission President and his wife have come to believe the event happened as Wendy and Russell have subsequently retold it? Or are they now in on the open secret that the Nelsons lie in order to aggrandise themselves?

That's a very interesting question, in light of our recent discussions here about Book of Mormon witnesses being dependent or independently given. Was there a component of pressure to fall in line with the story Smith wanted told, in the group statement?

I think the Mozambique bandits made their daring escape when the fiery plane made its nose dive landing in a farmer's field in Delta, Utah (unless I am jumbling up the tall tales... hard to keep them straight unless RFM is narrating the story in his brilliant way). I think it’s interesting that Smith had to be there, and it had to be in a group. That’s how leading the witness and peer pressure works. In that scenario, are you going to be the one who says he can’t see anything? The one person that did, was taken aside by Smith and pressured one on one until he “saw” what the others saw. I wonder what deal Smuth did with Harris during that moment…
