In a response to the new horror film Heretic, in which two female lads missionaries are terrorised, a Church spokesperson has presented a statement from the Church. In it he says:

There are nearly 80,000 Latter-day Saint missionaries currently serving in missions around the world, Anderson continued, adding that the church provides its missionaries “a thorough, regular program of physical and emotional safety training.”

“Our commitment is to foster a culture of respect, empowerment, and safety for all individuals,” he said.

That’s news to me.

“Nearly 80,000 young women and young men serve in one of 450 missions for periods of 18 to 24 months,” the post states. “Each of these individuals has family, friends and Church members who love and support them. The well-being and safety of these missionaries are our priority, and each missionary is expected to complete training and follow missionary standards to help protect them and reduce risk while they serve.”

I’d like to know, specifically, the training missionaries receive on physical and emotional safety. The Church has a habit of promoting an inflated opinion about what it provides - like when it self-claimed a gold standard of preventing child abuse.

They no longer completely isolate the missionaries from their families, allowing more than just a phone call on Christmas. In the Mormon leaders' mind that’s more than enough to take care of these fragile snowflakes' feelings.

Missionaries now get to watch short entertaining safety videos in the MTC. Among some of the great advice in the safety training videos is the advice to not eat food that tastes funny/rotten, always look both ways when crossing the street, obey all traffic laws and wash your hands before meals.

The ten safety/self care topics covered in these videos are important. Missionaries nowadays are given a lot more preparation on these topics than those of my generation. Kudos to the church produced training platform. It can only result in good.

There's no video on whether a missionary should take as his 12th wife a woman married to another man, and then while on a second mission, try to abscond with the children of the prior marriage. Seems like a pretty big safety risk that is now just being ignored.

How do we know you’re not a “fragile snowflake”?

Can you prove it?

One could say that those that stop looking for God are fragile snowflakes. How are ya’ going to define it?

I’m referring (tongue in cheek) to the old church leaders who didn’t have the luxury of calling home on their missions. They walked to school through a mile of snow, uphill. In full wool garments.

Modern Mormon kids are sent out to their missions with cell phones, regular family contact, and garments with spaghetti straps. The church bowed to the “snowflake” needs of the new generation. At least they can call it “revelation.”

I remember one of my interviews with my mission president.

Out of the blue, he started talking about why missionaries aren't allowed to swim. He then went on to talking about the myth of Satan having control over the waters, etc., and then said that wasn't it. That that wasn't true. That the real reason is that they didn't want missionaries drowning, and that it was a one size fits all rule, no matter how good a swimmer a missionary might have been.

Background: I was a collegiate swimmer and avid surfer, and he knew it. And this wasn't "out of the blue," as a couple months before, our mission district spend p-day at the beach (Central America), and I and one other from our group borrowed a couple boards to go surfing. Everyone else went out into the water, but obviously someone felt guilty and ratted us out.

Mission president simply told me that, didn't ask any questions, and ended the interview. My impression was that he was truly concerned about our safety. He was responsible for around 150 19-21 year old otherwise irresponsible kids, and he took that seriously. There's no way I would want that.

As long as we understand that you are putting thoughts and words into someone else’s mind/mouth. You’re making stuff up.

Doing more than they did 50 years ago, is not the same as doing enough.
