With a few circular discussions slipping past my interest limits I wandered about thinking about how religious leaders influence people and found this sharp little article about Marjoe. A religious leader and controller gives people what they desire. Marjoe developed some expertise but withdrew unwilling to maintain the pretense. He can speak clearly as to how it can be done.

One might see parallels to Joseph Smith or to quite a few other folks.
If you had the misfortune of missing this fascinating film, here is a little information from Wikipedia to find out who Marjoe is:

I hope you get some folks in on this thread. As of today I need to again slow my pace on participation for a period of time. Catch my breath.
Take care.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MarjoeGortner rejoined the ministry as a young adult solely as a means of earning a living, not as a believer. He spent the next several years using his fame and status as an evangelist to earn a living from both tent revivals and televangelism. In his late 20s, Gortner suffered a crisis of conscience of sorts and decided to give up the revival circuit, but not any of the money he made from it. He offered a documentary film crew unrestricted access to him during his final revival tour, which took place in 1971.
The film contains scenes from revival meetings showing Gortner preaching and praying for people in Los Angeles, Fort Worth, Detroit, and Anaheim. This is interspersed with footage of Gortner admitting on camera that he was a non-believer and revealing the tactics that he and other evangelists used to manipulate people and to move them during revivals.
That’s very interesting. LDS Apostles are taught to speak with “Heartsell” which is a technique to manipulate and move people to “feel” something during the talk.

At Bonneville Communications, our ability to touch the hearts and minds of audiences makes us an essential resource for organizations with vital messages.
For more than 30 years, our creative professionals have designed public service and direct response messages for national nonprofit organizations such as the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Boy Scouts of America, National Hospice Foundation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and The Salvation Army.
Our unique strength is the ability to touch the hearts and minds of our audiences, evoking first feeling, then thought and, finally, action. We call this uniquely powerful brand of creative “HeartSell”® – strategic emotional advertising that stimulates response.
I will certainly be searching out and watching the Marjorie film. Thank you for the recommendation.

Marjoe is a great film. I highly recommend it. I think I went so far as to buy it through Apple.

Re: Meeting people's expectations
This thread reminded me of how people stopping you in the streets and coming to our doors have changed tactics in recent years from my perspective. But they irk me. Especially when women think flirting is an acceptable way to try to sell something to another woman. Just makes me uncomfortable.
