CWK: Platforming Polygamy Deniers

Coffee with Kish is back!

For a special episode on the kerfuffle over Journal of Mormon Polygamy, which features scholarship from polygamy deniers! Scholars such as Christopher Blythe at BYU are criticizing the journal for platforming conspiracy theorists, while others defend the journal for bringing together starkly different viewpoints in one venue. Watch this video for my thoughts on the timely issues surrounding this controversy.

By the way, if any of you are interested in reading Journal of Mormon Polygamy's first issue, here is a link:

I am excited to see my friends Cheryl Bruno and Clair Barrus among the authors.

Reverend, I’m glad to see your informative program return. Your hair is on point.

Would you kindly add some color to what you refer to as the “kerfuffle” over the new journal? Is the blowback occurring on Facebook or in other online venues? Are any Interpreter acolytes involved?

Yay, Kishkumen, you're the one.
Yay, Kiskummen. Yay, Kishkumen!

Joseph, just tell your crowd that you made up the drawn sword.
They will understand, yes, they will understand.

Thank you, Doctor! I am honored that a distinguished scholar of Mopologetics such as yourself would take the time to watch my humble contributions.

Ah, thanks, Tom! I was trying to stay out of the personal aspect of the whole thing, as I am friends with people on both sides of the issue of the journal itself. (I do not actually personally know any polygamy deniers.) Cheryl Bruno, with whom I spoke at Sunstone some years ago, is one of the founders of the journal, while Chris Blythe of BYU, whose dissertation committee I was on, is a public critic of the journal.

Thank you, Moksha! Your encouragement means so much to me! You have been in my thoughts when I considered whether to make more episodes.

Understood. To clarify, my curiosity is mainly directed to whether the blowback occurred on Facebook or if the discussion has taken place somewhere else (and less about the personal aspects and details of the kerfuffle). I’m a loyal user of Google+ and haven’t made the leap to Facebook. I fear that I am out of the loop on Mormon things.

On a related note, I see that a Sunstone Symposium session tomorrow featuring Mary Ann Clements as the speaker is titled, “Giving Oxygen to Conspiracy Theories? Why Scholars Need to Address Polygamy ‘Truther’ Arguments.”

One other question: did you produce an episode 43?
