Service mission vs proselytizing mission

Post by drumdude »

I was recommended this video of a young person reading their mission call:

I didn't realize that young people can be called on a service mission where they stay at home with their parents, rather than go out. How rare/common is this? It seems like perhaps this young latter-day saint may have a bit of an intellectual disability, so the church decides he isn't fit to serve out in a regular mission field?

Many missions have a small group of service missionaries. Maybe a dozen or less per mission outside of Utah. You’re right in your assessment, they are usually called to serve as a service missionary if they have some sort of disability, mental illness, or injury.
