Sad news for those who loved him. I liked him better as an apostle than as a president of the LDS Church. I am, however, grateful that he was at the helm during COVID-19, and I am also grateful that he kept Elder Oaks out of the hot seat as long as he did. I am not eager for President Oaks.

Condolences to his gamily, friends, and admirers!

And now, being a past prophet anything Nelson said is negotiable by Oaks.

Death is a transition to something else, of which Nelson will probably try his best at also. Oaks will be interesting to see and watch how he handles it all. Of course, now that he is prophet (the automatic stuff is silly, but let's play the game) Nelson is outdated and dead, so it will be up to Oaks to make sure the lesbians, queers, trans, and anyone else he doesn't think is human is properly disposed of. We must keep the church white and delightsome and clean so Jesus can come back soon. He won't come to a dirty house, so house sweeping will probably begin very soon with Oaks carrying the biggest broom. Will he revive FARMS? What or who will he emphasize? I betchta he doesn't want to spend all that money on all those temples that Nelson ordered just to outshine all the other presidents. It was a rather futile silly race to glory so he could blurt out "I built more than you did!" Any predictions on Oaks shenanigans soon to be revealed?

Rest in peace. I wish the best to his family and although I disagreed with most of his policies and actions, I think he was a genuinely good man. I do hope his successors take a different approach to leading one of the world’s richest religions.

I'm happy that he didn't have to endure blindness for too long. One of my grandmothers also lived to 101, and in her last years her sight failed due to macular degeneration, so she was almost blind. She also became so frail that it was hard for her even to move. Everything in life got to be hard for her. At one point she told my mother that every morning when she woke up she felt, "Oh no, not this again."

In the end she was released by pneumonia. Pneumonia is sometimes called the old person's friend, because when the body has failed to the point where life itself is a struggle, it's a painless and calm way to die. I was at work in my office in Germany when I got the call that Gram was dying and I could call a family member's cell phone to say some last words to her. I caught my breath, thought for a bit, and made the call. I don't know whether she understood what I said, but they told me afterwards that she seemed to react to my voice. Anyway it was important for me. She meant a lot to me and my family. Later we had a big family memorial for her, which she had planned in advance, specifying fireworks, gin and tonic, and the spiritual "I'll fly away."

Gram did a lot of things well in her life, and one of them was the last thing. She died well. I hope Russell Nelson did, too.
