It appears from your comment that you don't believe that 'more is better' when it comes to exploring some of these issues. Your mind is set.
For others this first installment in the series on plural marriage might be interesting in that the guest being interviewed by Patrick Mason is Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. Here is a short biography:
One thing that becomes apparent very quickly as she is presenting her material is that she knows what she is talking about. She is an academic who has studied polygamy over many years. And not just Mormon polygamy. She is a scholar. At the very beginning she makes it clear that the historical lens does not always provide a sharp/clear view of what was actually going on, on the ground, so to speak.Laurel Thatcher Ulrich is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian known for her extensive research on polygamy and its impact on early Mormon women. Her book, A House Full of Females: Plural Marriage and Women’s Rights in Early Mormonism, 1835–1870, offers a nuanced perspective on the subject, exploring the lives of women in polygamous relationships and their contributions to the LDS Church. Ulrich's work has been influential in understanding the complexities of gender relations and women's rights during the early 19th century.
I'm about half way through and am finding that she covers the bases and then some. I would encourage folks to listen to the series.
drumdude, I was saddened to read your rather cryptic and judgemental response. It sounds as if you've already made up your mind and that this particular issue is a pillar of your disbelief in the Restoration.

Yup. I'm already fully convinced that it is a bad thing for a society if rich and powerful men can accumulate large numbers of women, thus ensuring that:
1. Young men in that society are inevitably going to find it impossible to find a partner (e.g, the 'lost boys' effectively expelled from Warren Jeff's church).
2. The young women accumulated by the rich and powerful will in many cases lack the normal experience of a full-time loving partner to whose life they are central.

Obviously polygamy is still a festering sore for the LDS--some 135 years after the manifesto--for them to dish up this 5-part apologetic for it.

Does this cover the rationale for a 37 year old Joseph Smith marrying and having sex with a “mere girl” of 14 years old?MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 12:15 amHi all,

Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Again, the troll trolls. The mental gymnast has said that more is not better, his mind is set, he's already made up his mind, particular issues are pillars of his belief, etc., etc., etc.. Every judgmental mindset he accuses others of is yet another projection from his own mind.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 4:50 pm... you don't believe that 'more is better' when it comes to exploring some of these issues. When a 37 year old marries a 14 year old, do you question the 14 year old about sex?huckelberry wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 5:58 pmSo did Helen report that she had sex with Joseph Smith?I Have Questions wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 5:12 pmDoes this cover the rationale for a 37 year old Joseph Smith marrying and having sex with a “mere girl” of 14 years old?

She lived many years past fourteen but it certainly is not usual to ask older women about that. Best I know Helen did not explain. She may have or may not have had sex with Joseph Smith.Marcus wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 6:06 pmWhen a 37 year old marries a 14 year old, do you question the 14 year old about sex?huckelberry wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 5:58 pmSo did Helen report that she had sex with Joseph Smith?
