Lest we forget, Dallin Oaks--you know, that obscure mostly forgotten president of BYU in the 70s, now a mere footnote in LDS history--gave a speech on November 1, 1977, admonishing BYU football fans for booing and engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct during games. He expressed concern that such behavior was inconsistent with the university's standards and the principles of the Mormon church. This was right after a controversial loss to the University of Washington. Many BYU fans booed the officials' calls. Oaks publicly condemned the booing, and suggested instead that BYU fans disappointed in the officials' calls in the future instead just go "ahhh."I Have Questions wrote: ↑Wed Nov 26, 2025 10:35 amWhy doesn’t the word of God (scripture) have the same threshold for public decorum and politeness that you say sports fans have? Why are you holding God and his Prophets to a lower standard of behaviour than sports fans?MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 26, 2025 12:25 amAs I've gone into some detail in on another thread, I think that you are conflating two different categories. That is why I mentioned that it looks like you've committed a category error. You are comparing sports fans behavior vs. scripture. One involves civic responsibility, and the other involves religious truth claims.
Perhaps Dallin will have a revelation that the Book of Mormon needs another correction, so that all that it says about other religions is "ahhh."
