Can the LDS church leaders be as brave as Dan McClellan?

Dan just called out the administration for blatantly lying to the American people. Something that is increasingly dangerous for those speaking out.

It seems to me that a dose of courage from the LDS church, speaking out against Trump and condemning this would go a long way towards healing the country. It’s going to take conservatives, not progressives, stepping forward to make progress. The LDS church did this with masks, they did it with vaccines, and they are in the position to do it again now.
Will they have the courage?

Nope. All they will say is she shouldn't have dressed like that and went to the party. He shouldn't have went there with a gun. Those ICE agents couldn't resist firing 10 shots into a defenseless person.

I'm less optimistic than you that any statement from the church would make a noticeable difference, never mind going a long way towards anything.
I believe that they are simply not seen as moral leaders for the country. In most people's minds they don't figure at all, and in the minds of people who do know of them - except for many active "worthy" LDS - they have nothing significant to say. I suspect that most non-members know little about LDS leaders beyond perhaps knowing about the involvement of the church in Prop 8.

In my opinion it would be seen as a shift in the right direction. The less road blocks that MAGA has, the easier it is for them to continue on this path. The more people and institutions who begin to speak up, the easier it is for more to speak up.
While I agree the LDS church in itself wouldn’t convince many conservatives, it would be a newsworthy event that could spark more to speak out.

God bless Dan McClellan for having the guts to speak out. The first presidency would never do something like this. They can make their stand and spend their money on things like ruining the lives of transgender kids or kicking against the pricks with gay marriage, but to speak out on violent authoritarian rule is a non-starter for them. They didn't do it in 1939, and they're not going to do it now.

No. Church leaders generally support Trump, and they know that a majority of the people in the pews that are eligible to vote increasingly support Trump more vociferously than they support the Church.
