BYP Tolkien Commentary

I want to credit Philo for his insightful "BYP" commentary in the video below. He offers a compelling distinction between heroic confrontation and humble restoration, using the contrast between Aragorn’s martial prowess and Samwise Gamgee’s gardening. His thesis—that "war can defeat evil, but only ordinary courage can undo its damage"—mirrors my own departure from Mormonism.
The initial transition was, by all available memory, a war. It required an exhaustive deconstruction of lifelong beliefs, an interrogation of "divine" experiences, and a rigorous, objective audit of church history and apologetics. It was the most intellectually and emotionally demanding period of my life.
Yet, as Philo articulates, the "victory" of leaving didn't equate to healing. Real recovery only began when I shifted from the battlefield to the garden—recommitting to my family as a humble partner and tending to my children’s growth with the patience and curiosity a gardner might bring to a new species. Thanks for sharing this, Dr. Moore! Philo has a lot of great commentary on Tolkien's work. I love how you related this to your own experience leaving Mormonism. Shows just how enduring the value of Tolkien's work is, and why it is important to have sensitive readers like Philo talking about it.
