I found this great video on YouTube from a practicing Mormon criticizing the new church curriculum.

He explains that the CFM manual for the Old Testament completely misrepresents the actual stories of the Old Testament and transforms them into childish reminders of basic gospel doctrine.

There used to be a gospel doctrines class when I was an investigator which focused on a handful of shallow teachings. It seems that shallowness has permeated through all aspects of LDS lessons now.

I was lucky to have a very good regular Sunday school teacher. Admittedly he didn’t spend a lot of time in the lesson manual back then (circa 2012).

I do think that the church has put more pressure on following the manuals and is trying to leave less room for improvisation.

I’m sure it does suck. Most people don’t understand the Old Testament because they approach it as a univocal literary artifact rather than a diachronically stratified textual corpus whose compositional layers, redactional seams, source traditions, linguistic registers, textual variants, and shifting sociopolitical sitz im leben reflect centuries of scribal transmission, ideological negotiation, and theological reinterpretation across monarchic, exilic, Persian, and Hellenistic contexts.

And I include myself in that.

It sucks because most of what is written in the Old Testament has no bearing on today's society, Mormon or otherwise. For example, what are we to take from the message in the Old Testament about women's voices at Church... "Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. (1 Cor 14:34–35 - NIV)"

It's archaic and irrelevant, and so the church has to have a curriculum that tip toes around this kind of thing. Cherry picking things they think support the message that the Mormon church is the only one that's right.

1 Corinthians is New Testament. It’s just that that only means it’s newer than the Old Testament. It’s still nearly 2000 years old.
