There could be some money to be made providing anti-espionage services to your regular LDS meetings. Apparently the content of these meetings is so sensitive that they simply cannot be allowed to leave the meetings.



I wonder what other religions have such an extreme aversion to their services being recorded? They’re really giving Scientology a run for their money!

Why is Brother Wilcox so petrified of his message getting out? He’s any there some advice about hiding lights under bushels? It’s as if he knows that his intended message is not acceptable. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t recorded.

A speaker would ONLY do this if they had something to hide. Clearly he has learned from his past speaking experiences.

Do "the Brethren" not realize how bad a look it is for them to ask people not to record them?

The younger generations have grown up in the digital information age. They do not expect privacy. (It is mostly older people upset by and opposing Flock cameras, for example.) It is with this context that these younger generations view requests like that made by Wilcox that nobody record his speech. That secrecy bothers them beyond what it may for older generations of Mormons.

One would think 30+ years into this digital information age that even the aging-out "Brethren" would realize how many members (especially young members) of the church it is hemorrhaging because of (a) still trying to control (distort) the church's history, which now can be easily dispelled by a couple of Google searches to look for themselves at primary sources of that history, and (b) taking steps that look borderline 'cloak and dagger' to the younger generations, such as asking that they not be recorded.

I remember leaders giving lame excuses regarding the gestapo no recording mandate. The first? The message is for the people in attendance and the holy ghost will manifest the truth of it in real time. Second? Nefarious people will use AI to alter the message and spread falsehoods to the world. Sounds almost like the lost 116 pages excuse is alive and well.

Brad has had problems with off-the-cuff statements or just idiotic thoughts. I think though there is also a limit to how many unique speeches these guys have, it's easier to have the bones worked out, refine/adjust it in the moment, but largely they put some blocks together and give the same basic talk all over, and while recording isn't new, going viral and ease for it to spread is at an all-time high.
