It's been a long time since I've posted on this board and it's funny that I ended up on this thread. The Book of Abraham was a "catalyst" for me leaving Mormonism.

I see the OP is playing the game of life the best way he knows how but he is clearly still in the cave and unable to see the true light is not his shadows. Even with others condescending like the grace of God to reenter the cave and help him see that the shadows are not the true light are being rejected by him.

Leave him to his shadows and truths. He's not ready and may never be.

Best to you OP. I wish you well.

I can appreciate those sentiments and well wishes.

Thanks for chiming in.

Careful, Shulem. I think that might count as disinviting a poster - I mean, I don't think the nether regions have internet coverage.

I know. I know. But my eyes are rolling so hard that I couldn't resist telling him to go to hell. But, as you know, he said earlier in more ways than one:
Ed1 wrote:you are pure evil

So, I'm going to repeat myself, for good measure:

Go to hell, Ed.

And don't contact me again you sick and sorry son of a bitch!

....because you are simply evil people....you are pure evil, and there is no good in you....You are the kind of people that drive weak people to suicide, which I am not, and you revel in the possibility of causing real damage to others. Attempting to cause psychological damage to others is a game to you....
Something WORSE than this was deleted?!?! Something that named names and had threats?! That’s pretty creepy. :(
.... You would cause my child to commit suicide....
That too. What an incredibly horrible thing to say.

Lem,

He threatened to come after posters and ruin them financially. I’m not kidding. He had his eye squarely on you and more especially, I assume, me too. He’s in an utter rage. He’s frothing at the mouth and acting like he’s going to sue us all for imaginary damages in his piss soaked brain.

And, I’ve not done anything wrong. I’m just trying to read my new Vogel book. Ed is the one who came on this board to pick a fight. Poor me.

The catalyst theory is what I call "Joseph and God dumb and dumber theory".
OK, but what do you think of Ed1’s defense of it in his paper? It’s new, it throws a different light on the subject, and, I think, deserves to be engaged. If you don’t like it, fine, but at least tell why it doesn’t work...
OK. His catalyst idea is basically the traditional idea except that someone who made the hor scroll added a secret meaning to the text with no way for anyone to know that it exists, except God. Why? It makes no sense at all. Anyone could make this up for any text. It's not that people haven't done so, but only for other people who could use a cipher to receive the message. Since no cipher, only God could know someone put a secret meaning to a funerary text. Joseph didn't need that. He got the book of Moses without any text or artifact. Joseph also didn't claim this at all.

The Book of Abraham is also not meant to be a secret, so no need of secret meanings. Joseph claimed he was translating Egyptian just as he did reformed Egyptian. The only difference from a traditional translation is some divine power is doing the translation. Ed also cannot make some of Joseph's Egyptian claims work as others have shown. In the end Joseph has to be dumb to make some of the claims he did and God dumber to go along with this hair brained scheme.

Yes, the crossroads hieroglyph is explained exactly this way in Karl-Theodor Zauzich’s beautiful little book Hieroglyphs without Mystery which I have on my shelf and just checked now.
For anyone interested, Amazon sells good used hardbound copies of this delivered for only $8.00 here
Are there any books that offer a simplified LDS-alternative interpretation of Egyptian hieroglyphs? Something that gives a Faithful Answers, Informed Response, but without an attachment to that devil word?

Right, and he'll just continue to try and justify Smith's false ideas using any kind of symbolism and expression in order to try and find some kind of parallel to make it work in his own mind. It's all in Ed's mind -- his own little world of self expression and thought as he pretends to marry Smith's Egyptian with conventional Egyptology. What a futile exercise in stupidity -- I've been guilty of that back when I was an apologist having dived deep into the silly realms of trying to make something out of nothing in effort to show Smith was correct. It's anything goes, a total free-for-all.

No matter what Ed does, he cannot tell us the name of the King in Facsimile No. 3 and neither can he justify Smith's silly explanations therein. Try as he may, he will fail every single time.

Anyway, I'm done with him and he's gone now.

Lem (if ur still there),

Really though, poor Ed was so angry when he wrote that post threatening US (and you) that he actually said "I swear" that he would come after us financially and ruin us if any of his children ever committed suicide as a result of being influenced by what we have to say on this board regarding our opposition to Joe's Egyptology. Serious, he's very unstable. Do not engage him, it's a waste of time. I will never engage him again. He's freaking crazy.

This thread is dead to me.

Thanks for the heads up, Shulem. That's a pretty creepy thing for Ed to post. Unstable is right, no more engagement.

And honestly, I do feel bad about the the way the whole thing went down. It was the "quibbles" reply that got me upset and from that point I was getting really annoyed. I was going to take the time to go through every part of his stinking paper but we couldn't get past square one. Well, at least I know now not to bother with him ever again. What's funny is this is the one board that would give him a listening ear and honest to goodness feedback but he bit the hands that feed him. It's sad.
