You know about lying for the Lord but what about ....ing for the Lord?

Post by kairos »

Surfing on ex-Mormon Reddit , an interesting question was tossed out for comment “Did your parents bribe you to serve a mission? Lots of affirmative answers with lots of types of bribes- “if you serve an honorable mission, we(parents ) will : buy you a new car or motorcycle, pay for college, set you up in the family business, even buy you a house, give you cash of X thousand dollars. But if you don’t go or don’t serve out your time, well the bribe turns into a penalty ranging from zero support from parents to “disowning “ you as a son.
Not only were parents the bribers but bishops, SPs, other family members like uncle or grandpa.
Until I read through that thread did I as a nevermo fathom bribing for the Lord was a pillar of the church like lying for the Lord.

Did you or those you know encounter the bribing to go on a mission principle? How do?

Some were, some weren’t. There are/were as many different stories and circumstances as there are/were individual missionaries.

In general, though, the bribe-ees would be from well-to-do families that placed a very high premium on appearances.

I failed to mention that some men were bribed by a girlfriend : “Josh if you serve a mission I will marry you when you get back” . The RM now exmo telling this story that he went on a mission, and his girlfriend did likewise but she returned home before him, and just before he returned he received the Dear Elder letter announcing she was marrying a guy from her mission.
Is it really a bribe or blackmail by the girl in those cases?

Do you know the difference between bribery and blackmail?

I was so terrified of the legendary "Dear John" letter I told all the girls I had dated, and my then girlfriend I was no longer available, and I wouldn't be writing them on my mission. I gave all the gals I had dated and who attended my farewell I had given them the Dear Jane letter. It worked.

This type of thing I would class as one of the unintended consequences that come from brainwashing teenagers into thinking they must get married as soon as they return from their mission.

Shades- I will not go to Webster but try to my shallow understanding on bribery versus blackmail in the aforementioned case.

Bribery: Sister Susie offers marriage to Brad as a “reward “ for him serving an honorable mission. She bribes Brad.

Blackmail: Sister Susie tells Brad unless he goes on a mission she will tell the bishop that she and Brad have been intimate (like rabbits) since 10th grade. Susie blackmails Brad.

Why no link?

Edit - Never mind, I found it

Hugh Nibley claimed he bumped into Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Gertrude Stein, and the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanoff. Dishonesty is baked into Mormonism.

Bumped for I know some of you were offered a bribe to go on a mission, attend seminary, read the Book of Mormon, get those baptisms up( steak dinner with the MP, watch conference; or perhaps bribed to not tattle on a violation of rules by a companion. Me as nevermo was bribed to go to Mass by mother at wits end on a child commuting a mortal sin.
Seems Mormon bribes are certainly up a notch as Emeril would say!
