An interesting thread on Cougarboard about psychedelics. Every single response is supportive and not a single one feels it’s a violation of the WoW.

Times are changing.

Blake O is a nice reminder that LDS apologetics of a certain kind attract unpleasant neurotics.

I have found treatments using ketamine, in a doctor's office, to be very helpful with my depression and anxiety.

Stig, thank you for sharing this. I've heard that Ketamine is extremely effective in disrupting brain signals involved in mood disorders/depression. I've heard it described as almost a "brain reset" depending on the dosage.

If you feel comfortable, I would love to hear about your experience. Were the results immediate?

My current meds work well, but if they poop out I may be headed to the Ketamine clinic. I’d love to hear more, too. Also, only if you’re comfortable.

Sure, glad to. My experience with ketamine treatments has been multi-facted. I was already working with a clinic trying to get my depression better under control and ketamine treatments was one of their offerings. I considered it something of a last resort. At one point, I needed to get myself out of a very deep, dark place in order to participate in an arbitration hearing in my role as expert witness and I couldn't seem to get there by any means I was using at the time. I called up my doctor there and asked if I could give ketamine a try. I was brought in on an emergent basis for a treatment. I will tell you that the results for the next few days were like night and day. My thinking was sharp and quick and clear. I felt like I hadn't in a very long time.

Based on that experience, I went ahead and did a full regimen of treatments (6 treatments, 2x/week, 3-weeks) designed to help the body sustain it's reset status for 2-4 months. Since that time, I have gone back for "boosters" (for lack of a better word) when I have been unable to get out of a particularly persistent depression. With very few exceptions, the ketamine treatment has allowed me to get out of the depression long enough to let my daily medications better do their jobs of stabilizing and normalizing my mood, and to help me get my head straightened out enough to once again apply the behavioral mechanisms I'd been working on with my counselor. A "reset" is a very apt description, in my experience.

In terms of the actual experience, itself - I have always received the treatment via infusion in a doctor's office under the care of a nurse. It has usually taken about an hour to an hour and a half. During the infusion, the experience is very dissociative. I have a very hard time convincing myself that my body is actually mine; I can look at my feet and move them, but am still not sure they are actually my feet. I become very talkative and high-disclosure. It's quite surreal, but once the infusion is finished, you are pretty much returned to normal functioning within 30-60 minutes. I've never had any negative side-effects from the treatment.

FYI - my insurance covers none of this, so it's all out of pocket for me and it's about $400 per treatment session. It's expensive, but has been very helpful for me.
