The anecdote was related in a 1990 BYU devotional.

The 2003 biography has this to say:
In September 1947, [Russell and Dantzel] drove to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Russell was to begin an internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. His mentor was the internationally renowned surgeon Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen, whom many regarded as one of the outstanding surgical teachers of modern times. Dr. Wangensteen was known for fostering a creative research climate and for supporting his protégés' research initiatives. . . . At the conclusion of his internship year, Russell successfully competed for advanced surgical training as a resident at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. In order to augment his routine surgical training, he pursued studies leading to a Ph.D. degree, with a major in surgery and a minor in physiology, which would enable him to engage in research under Dr. Maurice Visscher, a demanding and critical, but highly acclaimed, scientist.

According to his wikipedia page:
1945 Nelson graduated from the University Of Utah with a BA
1947 Nelson graduated from the University Of Utah School Of Medicine with a Doctor Of Medicine degree
After medical school, Nelson went to the University of Minnesota for his medical residency - are internship and residency the same thing?

I swear that guy has nothing but disrespect for people around him. These made-up stories are only growing, added to a list of others. Why would any chief of surgery get pissed if someone declined to drink? Even doctors realize there are recovering alcoholics among us, at the very least.
Have you noticed the recurring themes within Nelson's personal anecdotes? He's the calm and faithful hero figure and a colleague or acquaintance is a pantomime villain, which serves to make himself look better (in his eyes). I doubt there's another person that holds Nelson in higher regard than that in which he holds himself.

I suspect highly creative Mormon minds can concoct righteousness fantasies when being offered an alcoholic beverage, and when the occasion arises relating those fantasies in print so they can help inspire other Mormons.

I know what you mean, the one where President Nelson stood face to face with the ferocious beast in the Lion's Den and calmly bore his testimony of Joseph Smith and the Twelve Apostles was very inspiring, especially when he chose not to use that Cagium Openosa spell and chose thankfulness instead. Risky move, but it proved he would one day be President of the Church.

I believe that internship is the year prior to residency though some sources say that interns are sometimes referred to as first-year residents.

“At this point [graduation from medical school], the new doctor enters the first year of post-medical school training known as intern year. Interns (sometimes referred to as first-year residents) are doctors, but they may only practice medicine with guidance and supervision. They traditionally wear short white coats to signify their status as interns.

At completion of the internship year, interns enter residency. At this point, they’ve earned their M.D. degrees and may practice independently as general practitioners. However, the majority of doctors at this level pursue further training as residents. Depending on the chosen specialty, a residency may last from 2 to 7 years.”

The Wikipedia entry on Internship (Medicine) states with regard to the United States: “A medical internship typically lasts one year and usually begins on July 1. Internships are of two types: transitional and specialty track. After a physician completes an internship and Step 3 of the USMLE or Level 3 of the COMLEX-USA, they may practice as a general practitioner. However, most physicians complete a specialty track medical residency over two to seven years, depending on the specialty. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) officially dropped the term ‘intern’ in 1975, instead referring to individuals in their first year of graduate medical education as ‘residents’ (Residency Year 1, or R1).”

It sounds like Russ had a great career going with lots of opportunity, and then many years after the fact as a GA, he had to reconcile the dissonance between having integrated just fine in the world with the needs of the gospel to be ostracized and yet, rise above anyway.

It's a shame that he'd send his colleagues down the river like this in order to score persecution points with his followers; well, it's not just being persecuted, but being persecuted in a way the typifies what a great Mormon leader is expected to have endured in terms of being at odds with the world.

Dew’s book names Ivan Baronofsky as the head resident who became angry at Nelson for not taking a drink.

It is becoming evident to me that Nelson has a narcissistic personality.

I can't decide if his medical career and church career precipitated that personality, or just fed what was already there.
