As a nevermo and evangelical RC and long time Bible “student”, I have accessed really good Bible commentaries which help me understand wording, context, themes, etc of
the books of the Bible. Scholars like William Barclay, Raymond Brown and N.T. Wright. And these guys are really good having spent their lives studying the Bible. I ask honestly who are the go to Bible NOT Book of Mormon scholars and commentators on it.
Who and why do you see or know as the expert Mormon women and men who study and write Bible commentary like their Christian counter parts? And recommended works?
Thanx as always

I would reccomend David Bokovoy but he has not identified as Mormon since a couple of years ago so I don't know if that counts. He wrote Authoring the Old Testament which I enjoyed.

Kairos,
Whenever I have a question or just when I want to gain new insights into the Bible, I usually check out a website called mormoninterpreter.com.
You’ll find incredibly insightful Bible scholars like Louis Midgley, Daniel C. Peterson, Blake Ostler, Allen Wyatt and Russel Mcgregor.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. April Fool’s Day!
PS In all seriousness, I would recommend David Bokovoy.

For a believing LDS perspective, I would recommend Daniel McClellan.

Can't argue with this at all, nor with the Bokovoy recommendation. I think there is some sort of effort underway at BYU to get the scholars to start writing actual serious Bible commentaries. They are on the New Testament right now. There is a really quite good commentary on Luke out, and 1 Corinthians, although.....you know.......the Mormon slant on that one will be unavoidable, of course. I am not sure who is doing the Romans, but I hope it's good. I do believe they also just finished either Colossians or Ephesians.Sledge wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 12:02 amFor a believing LDS perspective, I would recommend Daniel McClellan.

But truly, finding good actual Bible commentary from Mormons is going to be truly rare. They aren't interested in the Bible in and of itself, but in making the Bible their own Mormon book. They rarely use or interact with scholars, just their own leaders ideas and Sunday School variety commentary's. But the new series looks mildly promising. I have no idea what it's called, but it is being done by many different scholars. Whichever one he does, if John Gee is one of the commentators, I promise, you will be better off keeping with the non-Mormon scholars. I am just really not at all impressed with Gee's manipulations of evidence any more, and this has happened with absolutely everything that silly man writes about, and he is always, truly, completely on the short end of the stick.
