A yes, it wasn't the Book of Mormon, it was the book of plausible deniability.
Did you have to look up the apologist response? I have a feeling you've never been a member of the church if you didn't know most members considered native americans to be lamanites.

Legacy. Oh the legacy one leaves behind. Understand ye not that?

Most members? Have you polled “most members?” Because you believed something does not mean everyone else did, too.drumdude wrote:

I almost didn’t dignify this with a response. I’ll be delighted to see how you think this makes any sense in light of the discussion.Rivendale wrote:

Lots of people care. Lots of people have lived their lives and fought to secure a legacy they would feel right about leaving behind them. Maybe someday you'll fit into that category. Perhaps.

I like the rock in the hat story. It is one of my favorite pieces of Joseph Smith lore. I find it understandable that people do not make pictures of the head in the hat. It is not a good visual. It looks a bit like a person eating their soup by putting their head in the bowl. I like hats and I like stone and enjoyed the story. If God wanted to send a long text to Joseph Smith I cannot think of any better way than a stone in a hat. Now I suppose there are other possibilities. There could even be ways less inclined to create smirks. But smirkers will smirk. lets have the stone in the hat.

Hugh Nibley claimed he bumped into Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Gertrude Stein, and the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanoff. Dishonesty is baked into Mormonism.
