GI Joe

Has anyone else seen the new GI Joe movie?

Eric mentioned that he was disappointed.

I took my son and we both loved it!!

Of course, I am completely ignorant to the original GI Joe story. I raised 2 girls, and my 5 year old is my first boy.

The movie has great special effects, and, ladies, Dennis Quaid looks gorgeous!

Liz,

I have been a fan of GI JOE since forever. When I was 6 I had a collection of the old large joes, but then when I was 12 the Larry Hama GI JOE years began. Hama was the guy who really designed all of the new Joe's, he wrote all of the "file cards" you used to cut off of the back of the toy packaging. When they first came out I bought a snake eyes and a motorcycle. This collection eventually expanded to include the massive Aircraft Carrier. I think at one time my brothers and I had over 100 of the action figures. Once my mom started having den meetings at the house these numbers whittled down as the little scouts started sneaking them out in their "nasty little pocketses".

I would give the movie a 6 1/2 out of 10. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. Ray Park was an excellent choice to play Snake Eyes. I wish they hadn't put him in the rubber suit, and the mouth thing wast the best. They brought Larry Hama in as a consultant, and he kept them from giving Snake Eyes a speaking part. Snake Eyes doesent talk, and its not for the reasons given in the movie. There was no oath of silence, he lost his voice and scarred his face (hence the mask) in a helicopter explosion while rescueing Scarlett whose rigging had gotten stuck in a door. Duke and Scarlett both came across very well in the movie. Ripcord was a strange choice over the Green Beret Stalker, and Heavy Duty is an odd choice since Roadblock is the more popular choice for the Heavy Machine Gunner.

The Movie was a fairly busy thing, trying to give us too much at once. I would have preferred something more like a Bond or Bourne movie approach, just with a team. The sequal is in production with a new director who will hopefully tone things down. Shortly before the movie there was an animated film shown late night on Cartoon Network called GI JOE Resolute. It kind of gave a farewell salute to the 80's cartoon. If you want to see the real Snake Eyes, you get him in this. His infiltration of the island and follow up duel with Storm Shadow is so good I got tears in my eyes. Its available on Youtube, enjoy:

Thanks, Gaz!

GI Joe is definitely a boy thing....but I have to tell you...I could get a lot more into GI Joe than I ever got into Barbie when the girls were young. UGH!

LOL

I'll let you know what my son thinks of the cartoons. Thanks for the links!

Liz,

UHHM... the cartoon I linked to is really more for "adult boys" than for boy boys. There are many many more cartoons available for younger GI JOE fans. Heres one here:
