A question for cinepro

Post by _Dr. Shades »

Hi cinepro,

In another thread, you mentioned attending a function at which Mel Gibson spoke. You commented, "Man is that guy crazy."

Please tell us more. What gave you the impression that he was crazy? What did he say/do, etc.?

.

Back in October of 2003, I saw "Braveheart" as part of a screening series of all the Best Picture Oscar winners at the AMPAS in Beverly Hills. For each weekly screening, they would bring in cast and crew from the film (if available) for a Q&A before or after.

As you might expect, these Q&A sessions were pretty interesting but tame, with the moderator asking questions and the person responding. Sometimes they would just ask people to stand before the screening and get some applause if they weren't doing a Q&A (or there were too many people).

At the "Braveheart" screening, there was no indication that anything special would be happening; beforehand, a few people who had bit parts or were incidental crew members were introduced, and we watched the show. As the movie ended, the evening's host took the stage for a Q&A with the writer (Randall Wallace) and some of the technical crew, and many of us were preparing to file out of the theater. Then the host said "we had some time with a special guest". To our surprise, Mel Gibson walked up to the stage and took a seat.

Ha! I even found a picture from the evening:

He was wearing jeans and a baseball cap. The moderator started off by asking some questions. They started off talking about the movie, but after about 10 or 15 minutes, the questions were getting shorter and shorter, and the answers were getting longer and longer. Pretty soon, Mel was veering wildly off topic and telling all sorts of odd stories about everything. And he was incredibly profane, with lots of swearing and off-color remarks. Honestly, his "manner" was exactly like Riggs in the Lethal Weapon movies, with the same inflections and physical tics. To this day, whenever a Lethal Weapon movie is on TV, I have to watch a little of it because it totally reminds me of that evening. It was like Mel Gibson stream-of-consciousness. I can't remember if the other people on the panel stuck around for the whole time or left early, because after a while it was all Mel, going 100mph.

I was there with a Christian friend, and this was the time when "The Passion Of The Christ" was being produced. I can remember leaning over to my friend and saying "Can you believe this is the same guy making a religious movie about Jesus?!" He just laughed.

The Q&A went on for over an hour, and it was obviously a very memorable experience. I was hoping Mel Gibson's commentary for the Braveheart DVD would be the same thing, but it's the exact opposite: incredibly boring!
