Where's Ryan Gosling's Oscar nod?

Post by _floatingboy »

Just saw Blue Valentine last night. Michelle Williams got an Oscar nomination for her role. Other than disliking her character (which I admit she did a decent job of portraying), I didn't find it particularly noteworthy. Ryan Gosling, on the other hand, did a GREAT job. WTF? Is the competition in Best Actor stiffer than Best Actress this year? For my money, the only two consistently good actors in this year's nominations are Jeff Bridges (pretty dang versatile, but has had some doozie roles) and Javier Bardem. I like James Franco pretty well but don't feel he's really in the upper echelon of actors. But I admit I haven't seen most of the movies these actors are nominated for. I have been slacking.

Best actress noms: As with the films above, I haven't seen most...I need to get back out there, dammit. But I like Natalie Portman pretty well in general. Nicole Kidman I'd rate at the level of Jeff Bridges. Some great roles (Birth!!) and some not-so-great ones. But I think she's versatile. I respect Annette Benning but she's not exactly the first to come to mind when I think of great actresses. And Jennifer Lawrence I don't think I know.

Maybe the men's category is a little stronger this year, but I still think Ryan Gosling deserves a look. Anybody got an opinion on it? (I know, I know, I probably shouldn't even make a post like this until I see most of the movies in which these actors appeared. Just going with their overall careers...)

-"Well, it must not have been very important or you wouldn't've forgotten it!"
-"Oh, I remember. I'm radioactive."

Did you know Ryan Gosling is an inactive Mormon. I dated a girl that was his cousin. He was going to come to a Mormon party one night and everyone was really excited but something came up and he couldn't make it.
