I'm looking for the title of a movie I saw a few years ago.
It was probably made in the 1990's. The initial setting had to do with paintings and a man and a woman in love, possibly married. However, the man dies and finds himself in an afterlife whose surroundings and effects are created by one's own imagination. Eventually, he meets up with other people and has to deal with their mentally created afterlives. He finds out later that his wife has died and, probably because of her sadness at his passing and inability to cope with it, she is in a hell of her own devising because of her mental state. He must now go rescue her.
Something like that. Does anyone know the title to this movie?

What Dreams May Come.
I remember it being an awful movie that was eye candy. Its visuals may have aged poorly given that it relied heavily on late 90's CGI.

Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pHCtLzmras
On further review, the cinematography still is impressive. Shame about, you know, everything else.

Ah yes. That's it. Thank you very much. I often like movies that overall aren't necessarily that great but have elements that are done well or impressed me emotionally somehow. Perhaps besides the visuals, it was the illustration of a soulmate that impressed me.
I'll have to see it again since it's been a while and maybe I'll get back here and tell you what I think now. The movie's visuals are much like being in a painting and maybe that's why I remember it.
The actual story is two people meet by chance, fall in love, marry and have two children. The children die and then he (Robin Williams) dies. An angel (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is sent to help him cope with heaven. She (Annabella Sciorra) commits suicide and he rescues her from hell.
What Dreams May Come
6.6 on IMDB
55 on Tomatometer (audience 85)
In other words, probably one of the more decent streams on NetFlix for this genre.
