Is it possible to be a liberal Mormon?

They do exist.... There's usually 2-4 (known) in each Ward I've been in.
So, it happens, but frankly they have some serious judgment problems in comparing the Gospel to political issues. In my last Ward the biggest liberal in the ward was our Elders quorum president. He was a good Mormon and a good caring and loving man, but when it came to politics he switched to the dark side in judgment.
