I'm a little tired of seeing Morgan Freeman so much these days but otherwise no complaints. I'm also getting tired of Tom Cruise doing the same types of "All American" things like reminisce about sports, a cabin by the lake, etc. but otherwise, no complaints. I suspect I'll be getting a little tired of seeing Will Smith when I watch his next movie, After Earth.
Good actors. Reasonable dialogue. A really good story but a little choppy and not enough details (which will likely always be a complaint with me and sci fi). Those who enjoyed the graphic novel this is based on also thought it should have been given the two or three movie treatment.
Others thought there are too many pieces of other movies in there; Star Wars, Independence Day, I Robot, etc. I saw some Aeon Flux too. What else did you see? I don't think being reminded of other movies sometimes can be helped. It's all been done before and it's a rare movie that has a very unique plot advancement so I'd forget about that if you can and just enjoy the ride.
I like my sci fi to be as realistic as possible or have plausible explanations. The landscape of earth has undergone severe geological shift, tsunamis, nuclear war and yet there is too much fortuitously intact side by side with absolute oblivion (pun intended).
But what is there does the job and is fascinating enough to make this a decent flick and a must see for sci fi fans. It is better than the mediocre ratings suggest. Some action. Some thinking. A nice paradigm shift. Based on how I interpreted the trailers, I was expecting yet another paradigm shift.
I liked how the story ended much better than the ending of one of the other movies listed above but I missed the red hair gal. You'll just have to watch it now..... ;)
Some backside nudity, adult situations, and a big but apropos F-U at the end.
I rate the spare, but very serviceable, Oblivion a 6.5 out of 10.
