"Mark Topics Read" doesn't seem to be working correctly

Post by _QuestionEverything »

I am new to this board, but have used a wide variety of LDS related and other boards for many years. I am a registered user ("QuestionEverything") although primarily lurking at this point. I sent this via PM to one of the technical moderators, and also by email, but haven't received any response in about a week or two. Thought I'd try to get some input here.

This concerns the fact that at least for me "Mark Topics Read" is not working correctly. I normally mark a forum read when I'm finished perusing it, so at my next visit, I can click the "first unread comment" icon at the left of any given topic to see what has been posted since I last read.

A few observations:

When I click the "Mark Topics Read" link, a window comes up saying that it has done this, but there are still posts that show the small icon on the left to click to go to the first unread message in a variety of threads.

When I do return, and click on the icon to go to the first unread message, it'll either go to the first post in that thread, or to the first message from the previous visit, and sometimes to the correct first unread message. It's just inconsistent and unpredictable.

I access the forum through my Desktop (Google Chrome), Phone (Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Verizon, stock browser), and an Asus Infinity Tablet (Android 4.2.1). Each seems to function independently in this regard, so I can't go seamlessly from one to the other in terms of finding the newest unread messages.

It is just this forum that displays this behavior, so I don't think it's a function of my setup, or anything else on my end. New Order Mormon, Further Light and Knowledge, as well as a variety of technology forums (XDA, various Android forums, etc.) all function properly in terms of marking all messages, read, and later easily going to the newest unread messages, and this behavior remains current and consistent, regardless of which device I use to access these forums.

Is this a known issue with this board, or is there somehow something I need to do differently? It makes it very cumbersome trying to efficiently monitor the various threads that interest me.

Thanks for any insight (as well as for a very entertaining, though sometimes frustrating board) you might have.

(And despite enabling immediate email notification of new posts in the threads where I have participated, I never do receive any email notification).

Thanks.

So am I the only one with this problem?

This behavior makes it very cumbersome to monitor the forum, and keep current, especially across multiple devices.

I was a convert to the Church back in 1972, spend decades in it as a faithful member, raised my children in it, and the cognitive dissonance finally caught up and left. But unfortunately it was too late to have a significant impact on 2 of my 4 children who are still fully active, raising the next generation in it, and remain unwilling to talk about it (but fortunately we are quite close otherwise).

So I like to keep abreast of current findings, thinking, policies, etc. so I can be as knowledgeable as possible when I can finally discuss things with them, and at least have them in a position where they can make an informed decision. I have some of my thoughts on a small blog (linked in my signature).

So all that said, my questions remain. And in fact, I didn't know about this response until I manually checked this thread, since I didn't receive the email notification I enabled when I started the threat.

I have the same problem (popped up a few months ago). I've tried many things to correct it. Shades (board owner) checked into it for me and couldn't find a solution.

Sorry for your troubles, but it's perversely gratifying to know that I'm not the only one that is cursed.

What I've been doing is to go to the "View New Posts" options on the top right hand of the page. That way, I think I can keep up with everything that's going on.

Nice to meet you, QuestionEverything. I like your board name!
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Welcome to Mormon Discussions. This board does not have the latest do-dads and features, but after a long fought battle the big guy relented and reinstated smilies. Now a feature that marked topics hastily skimmed would be very useful. Or perhaps a feature that could concatenate the dialog between poster and his sock puppets into one large post.

Threads by Droopy are meant to be reread for their many nuances and sheer brilliance.

Thanks for the welcome, and yes, 'misery does love company'! I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one

Maybe I'll try Internet Explorer (oh the horror!! :surprised: ) and see if that works any better.
