I don't know if the US debt really matters that much, but there is no doubt that conservatives are hypocrites.

I do not disagree. The debt spending is terribly hypocritical. I'm not at all happy about it. In some respects I will defend the politics of the situation. Going after the debt would have a painful impact on the economy, which would inevitably lead to a secession of power to the left. In my view, doing the best they can without the pain of going after entitlements is a more practical strategy. Trump is making big strides towards optimizing the bureaucracy, and look at how that's going with all the deep state drama. Things have to happen in a certain order. We also simply don't have sufficient majorities in congress to overcome the weak knees. Any attempt to go after entitlements would be crushed by folks like McCain, Flake, Sasse, Collins, Murkowski, even Ryan and McConnel, etc. It would be nice to have a government full of Rand Pauls, but alas. But yes, it's a hypocrisy and one that's very fair to point out and remind people of.

The US debt is now at 21.65 trillion dollars.
The Federal deficit grew to 779 billion dollars in fiscal year 2018. GOP Senator McConnell recently stated that he wants to get the federal budget deficit under control by going after Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. Link
But with the Democrats likely to take back the House soon, cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security are not going to happen anytime soon. And Trump promised that he wouldn't cut from Medicare and Social Security.
