So far as I can see, Trump has no enduring commitments to anything beyond his own power and fame. To secure those, he tries his best to look like whatever he thinks his potential supporters will vote for. Sometimes the image frays at the edges: for instance, his attempts to win the Bible Belt vote did not look so good after he failed to be able to show any specific knowledge of the contents of the Bible. Still, he waved it around from time to time, which was apparently all the voters in question needed from him. it's a low bar to have to cross.

So "telling voters that you believe in a religion that you don't really know much about, or care about, in order to get their votes" is not lying, it's just "campaigning"? Politician X tells lies, wins office and then when challenged on those lies replies with a pitying smile "Oh, didn't you realise I was just campaigning?".

That some politicians have said untrue things about what they would or could do when elected is not in dispute: the point is, rather, whether it is a wise move to create a new category of tolerated and consequence-free lying called 'campaigning'. To do so opens a whole new field for politics, in which lying is not only allowed but even expected ... but of course we have already seen that before, when TV commentators excuse telling blatant untruths on the basis that no reasonable person could possibly have believed that their statements were intended to be taken as true. A great future opens for democracy.

There are educated people who follow Trump and are willing to lie and say the election was stolen when they don't believe it, because to them all that matters is winning. Preserving what's left of their short lives with the lifestyle they are accustomed to has no price.

As Canpakes emphasized, I said Trump is no Hitler. And that should concern his followers.

Hitler didn't need to compromise, Trump does. What will he do when he doesn't need to?

Have the right-wingers who know they are lying as they cry "stolen election" thought about what Trump will do once he becomes the Supreme Leader of the United States?

He's not really a Christian. He throws his own to the wolves as necessary, as he did with the capital rioters. He's not really pro gun, or pro-anything that he fights for; he's just doing all that to be popular. He had no problem committing the arch-sin against fiscal conservativism; sending out billions of dollars in "stimulus," with his own name signed to the checks. And he was all for another round of stimulus.

Once Trump is your Dear Leader and doesn't need to compromise, what will he do then?

It's a dice roll. You have no idea what he'll decide he stands for. Nothing he's done so far are things he really cares about himself. I give it higher odds that a Donald Trump made life-long president by a Supreme Court who just makes it up and says he won, will take guns off the street before Democrats do.

Yup. Nothing matters to Trump except Trump's power and prestige. At least those Germans who voted for Hitler got (for a while) more or less what he promised.

Trump is not Hitler. One of the ways in which he is not like Hitler is that he really does not feel any serious obligation to deliver what was promised to his voters once they have voted for him. After all - what he says when seeking election is just 'campaigning', as another poster has kindly explained to us, and is immune from scrutiny as to its truth or falsehood.

I did not say it was lying or not lying. I actually have not seen anything other than your anecdote or hypothetical to judge it. I just asked if Trump campaigned.
