I thought this article was pretty interesting. This movie is actually getting people to reevaluate their relationships. Not such a bad thing.
I had no desire to see Barbie because, well, doesn't seem like I'm it's target audience. But now, given the "controversy" around it, I'll have to.
I also found out recently it has Will Ferrell, so it does have something for me (other than Margot Robbie who has basically taken over lately as one of my favorite actors).

Interesting. I didn't have this on my Bingo card. I didn't plan on watching it either, but now I'll be missing out on some sort of zeitgeist if I don't.Some Schmo wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 8:37 pmI thought this article was pretty interesting. When a Religion is good, I conceive that it will support itself; and when it cannot support itself, and God does not take care to support, so that its Professors are oblig’d to call for the help of the Civil Power, ’tis a Sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one.

Re: Barbie Pisses Off the Right, Because Everything Does...
Barbie was a surprisingly thoughtful, fun, and playful conversation between patriarchy and feminism, as well as a rebuke of the impossible standards that modern society places on women.
Its feminism is incredibly mild, and there is even some suggestion that feminism treats men poorly. There is innuendo in it but the film is pretty much sex-free. And despite all the pearl-clutching over a MtF trans actor playing a minor character, the film has very little to say directly about LGBT issues.
What the film does is suggest that both women and men are capable of developing purposes and identities apart from their relationships with one another, and that suggestion is apparently enough to terrify certain conservatives, who badly want women to see ourselves and our identities only in terms of men's wants and needs.
That said, even my Trumpiest of female friends on Facebook have been proudly posting about seeing the film and taking their daughters to see the film, so I'd guess this is yet another place where the male conservative talking heads like Ben Shapiro are badly out of touch with their female base.

Yeah, I get the feeling that Shapiro's schtick angering young men at the expense of everything else is because he's an angry young man himself, as I sense a lot of young men are these days. His popularity is sad commentary.MsJack wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 9:59 pmThat said, even my Trumpiest of female friends on Facebook have been proudly posting about seeing the film and taking their daughters to see the film, so I'd guess this is yet another place where the male conservative talking heads like Ben Shapiro are badly out of touch with their female base.

Wow! Interesting. Thanks, Schmo.
Ryan Gosling who is in the film was brought up in far-right Mormonism.
Word was he wasn’t very happy in it.
He’s made some really great movies.
I’m a big fan.
I’ll likely watch it when it goes to cable.

For sure.
I just found out recently he was raised LDS myself. It's funny - he looks like a Mormon. The mere suggestion is enough to get me thinking it, I suppose.yellowstone123 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 2:29 amRyan Gosling who is in the film was brought up in far-right Mormonism.
