Making Sense

Post by yellowstone123 »

When I read that Sam Harris had Anne Applebaum on his Making Sense podcast I was excited because to me they are so brilliant and articulate. She is an expert on Russia, Eastern Europe and propaganda used by those in power. The podcast is titled - How Democracies Fail.

I listened to this podcast three times yesterday, the full one first and then the one released on Youtube twice which is about twenty minutes shorter. It was such a breath of fresh air to the turmoil and toxicity that currently exits in today's political climate.

First Sam Harris and Anne Applebaum talk about her new book, Autocracy, Inc. The Dictators That Want to Rule the World. Other issues that are discussed are -

Modern Autocracy
Cooperation between Dictators
How western financial institutions and investors enable Autocracies
How Putin came to power
What is at stake in the war in the Ukraine.
Then they talk about Trump.

She makes good points. The issue is goals about collecting controlling money not the nationalist ideals of fascism which are not in play.

Thanks, Morley and Huckelberry for your thoughts. I agree Applebaum is brilliant. She also has studied Eastern Europe extensively and knows how bad things could go for the people. I did buy her boook, Gulag, two decades ago. It looks like she's written more books about Eastern Europe that I need to read.

Applebaum's an expert on--and has written pretty extensively about--authoritarianism. If I remember correctly, she's also married to some guy in the Polish Government. Because she's intimate with Eastern Europe's history regarding authoritarian governments, she really, really dislikes Trump and MAGA. It's hard not to take her seriously.
