Shades - Cibo Matto?

Post by Some Schmo »

Hey Shades,

Spotify recommended a few songs by Cibo Matto and I love them. They are a couple of Japanese ladies who moved to New York and started the band, giving it an Italian name for some reason, but they broke up in 2017. Miho Hatori was featured on a couple of Gorillaz albums (and I have serious attraction to her).

Have you heard of them? If so, do you like them? I know you have a thing for the Japanese ladies (which I completely understand), so I thought you might already be a fan. If not, check them out. I especially love their songs Spoon, Lint of Love, Speechless, and Sugar Water. Great stuff.

Let me know what you think.

Edit: Fixed band name.

Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense. It's also the favored cover for hypocrites.

Thanks for the recommendation, Some Schmo. Nope, I've never heard of them. I'll look them up on YouTube and give them a listen.

Cheers!

Great stuff.

I listened to all the songs you listed, plus a few more for good measure.

I suppose it works O.K. as lounge music. But if you like this, I'm quite shocked that you don't like Perfume, especially their older stuff.

What gives?

So, given what you asked, I thought I should go check out a couple of Perfume's most popular cuts, thinking I may have missed something. They sounded exactly as I remember.

There's a huge difference between the kind of hip hop funk Cibo Matto created and the electro pop from Perfume. I don't mind Perfume's vocals, but the music itself... well, that's "what gives."

They definitely have an infectious rhythm and harmonies that are pleasing to my ears. They are somewhat reminiscent of the Pointer Sisters. Have you ever heard them?

I know both those songs, Gunnar, but I've never really listened (really listened) to them. They are good. Beverly Hills Cop would not be the same without them.
