Ezias
On Jan 12 the CA legislature will vote whether to legalize marijuana and tax in in order to bring billions of dollars of revenue into the bankrupt government, eliminate the mexican mafia growing operations in the northern california mountains by eliminating the black market, thereby allowing hikers to once again enjoy the redwoods without being machine gunned down. It will eliiminate gang violence and all black market violence caused by it. It will free up billions of dollars in money used in the legal and jailing systems. It will allow people to practice their religion in peace. It will allow people to explore their own subconscious minds without government restriction. It will allow people to use medicine which is proven to kill all kinds of cancer cells. It will allow freedom and peace.

Ezias, I understand that you're a medicinal marijuana user, however, what you're saying above regarding eliminating the Mexcian mafia growing ops, black market, etc, I just strongly disagree wtih.

Have you thought this through?

Also the "freedom and peace", eliminating gang violence, etc. This is a pipe dream, Ezias.

My goodness man, you act as though legalizing pot is akin to the Second Coming.

It's NOT.

Like the state of California is going to wave a magic legalization wand and suddenly the black market, mafia ops, and gang violence are suddenly going to go "whoooosh!" and disappear.

Not happening, Ezias. Not happening.

Marijuana is not addictive like tobacco. Alcohol is not addictive like tobacco.
Some have predisposition to addiction and pot or alcohol may be one of those things that will trigger it. Most can use either without addiction problems. Tobacco becomes a major addiction for nearly all who use it more than a few times.

Per synanon and rehabilitation counselors who work with drug addiction it is more difficult to stop using tobacco than most hard drugs.

Legalizing use of pot will take a lot of the black market and smuggling out of the equation. It will still be there but on a much smaller scale as users will be able to buy it legally. It will be regulated, inspected and taxed. Much more of a penalty attached to tax evasion than possession related crimes.

The real problem is State vs Federal law. As so many other laws this will be used as a club over the head of those government wants to nail for whatever reason. It will not be enforced on the federal level evenly. It will be used as an add-on for other purposes to coerce those the Feds want to hammer.

I generally can go either way with drug legalization. If it's done, then we must allow schools, companies, renters, etc. to drug test students, buyers, and clients and withhold sales or service if they so desire based on the results.

bankrupt government

Also a corrupt government. The way to reign in corruption in government is to stop feeding it money.

Is pot any more addictive than alcohol?

I think so but even if it's not I'd support a new Prohibition movement too if one were available.

I have to agree with Jersey Girl here. I had not heard of marijuana actually "killing cancer cells". What I have read is that there is something unique in marijuana that eliminates nausea for cancer patients going through chemotherapy. Since vomiting and dehydration is a huge issue with cancer patients, especially since their immune system is already damaged, I see this as a big plus, from a cancer treatment perspective.

I would be interested in reading research indicating the effects of marijuana on actual cancer cells. Therefore, I echo the CFR on this. Can you point me in the direction of some information, Ezias?

Here is one link:

"Explaining that the introduction of THC into the brain triggers a cellular self-digestion process known as "autophagy," study co-author Guillermo Velasco said his team has isolated the specific pathway by which this process unfolds, and noted that it appears "to kill cancer cells, while it does not affect normal cells."

Here's another:

"It has previously been acknowledged that cannabis-based medicines have merit in the treatment of cancer patients as a painkiller; appetite stimulant and in reducing nausea, but recently evidence has been growing of its potential as an anti-tumour agent."

Thanks, Eric. From the article:

Dr Liu said: “It is important to stress that these cannabis-like substances are far removed from the cannabis that is smoked. These novel compounds have been specifically designed to be free of the psychoactive features, whilst maintaining anti-cancer action. Ultimately, understanding the fundamental mechanisms of these compounds will provide us with insights into developing new drugs that can be used to effectively treat cancers.”
Ends-

If I read the above correctly, it's saying that it's not pot. Even if it were pot, Eric, how does this make a case for the legalization of marijuana?

It doesn't.
