If some Muslims in Turkey had burned some Bibles and some in the US had reacted by killing some Muslims, would the Muslims in Turkey have been blamed for events? Of course not. That's why (in part) the Florida pastor is completely innocent; and no, his book burnings did not lead to any deaths.

It's a good illustration of the fact that the fundamentalist Christians are trying to bring back the 1950s, when "colored folks," women and "homos" knew their place, and there was prayer in schools. Meanwhile, fundamentalist Muslims are trying to bring back medieval times, when blasphemy (and nearly everything else) was punishable by death.

Advantage Christians, but both are reprehensible.

Wow, I'd really like to see what Rush and Glenn could do with a Bible-burning in some Muslim country! I'd be willing to bet that "Nuke 'em!" would be the mildest of their remarks.

But hey, I bet it would make Pastor Jones happy. After all, as a good Christian, he is surely following his Lord's injunction to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," so that means he wants people to be burning Bibles, no?

It's quite telling that neither has incited any such thing despite the fact that this does go on in other countries. Advantage Christians indeed!

Sorry, guess I've missed all the Bible-burnings by Moslems. Yeah, right.

In fact, there won't be any Bible-burnings by Moslems, because Islam enjoins its followers to have respect for the Bible as God's Word, equal to the respect in which they hold the Koran. So to Moslems, Bible-burning is just as abhorrent as Koran-burning. And so my comment about doing unto others still applies.

But I think that the root of this thread lies in a misapprehension of reality. The rabid anti-Western stand of some Moslem groups, such as the Wahabis who make up al-Qaeda, is about as representative of mainstream Islam as, say, Patrick Buchanan and Jerry Falwell are of mainstream Christianity.

And be it also noted that there are many Christians who find the mysticism of the Moslem poets Rumi and Jalal-ed-Din to be very helpful in their Christian devotions. Just as the Sufis, likewise, find their devotion to Christ a great addition to their Islamic faith.
