I would rather use it in the context of giving up at seeing absolute and hopeless idiocy. It is more like shutting down the drama queen or king.No word imparts drama as well as well as <sigh>.

I never type out "sigh" on message boards. I almost always say something like "holy crap" to convey the same meaning.
